    SimCity (PC) review

So, Manged to get this unlocked and had a really good play last night.

Really really enjoying it, they have simplified it whilst leaving lots of cool visual info-graphics to help you easily understand what is going on.

If you've played the beta or read anything about it then you'd know that they have removed the need to buy power lines/water pipes. Water and power now runs inside of any kind of road or path, for me this is much better, it lets you get on with the main bulk of building and managing your city without having to do fiddly time wasting type things.

The city space is significantly smaller than previous games, there have been many comments about this, from what I can gather the game now revolves around having multiple cities within a region and trading between them.
Sims and resources can move between your multiple cities, but as time doesn't pass in another city whilst you are in another the game is actively encouraging you to play the game socially and in a region with other players.
It does feel like a multiplayer game in that respect, there is a little chat box in the corner of your screen so you can actually politely ask for assistance if your city has become overrun with crime or fires for example.
The smaller cities also allows you to very quickly put together a city, but the real trick is creating one that doesn't break.

Each person in your city lives out a real life, so there are true flows of traffic between the different districts you have created, people leave work, go shopping, commute out of your city etc so actual city planning can become really meticulous if you want it to.

Now I will talk about the white elephant in the room, it is truly online only, a trend becoming more an more apparent, following on from last week's Tomb Raider Digital Edition on PS3 which also has online only DRM.

You require a connection to the server to start playing, but once you are going it's not so bad, the city is stored on a server and not on your machine, if you lose your connection mid game you are ok, you can carry on playing, but unless you reconnect your city will not sync and be lost upon exit.
In itself it's not a bad thing, the game has very clearly been built from the ground up to be played with others, strangers or otherwise, but you are at the mercy of EAs servers.

The servers have been going haywire and right now I am not able to play.

Polygon just gave this a 4/10 because of EA incompetence. Originally it was going to be a 9.5.

Please, please let these companies learn from this.

Funny how Diablo 3's 10/10 still stands tall on polygon though.
Also funny how EA didn't learn from Diablo 3.

Indeed. Maybe reviewers have had enough of this crap too now.

I think it's just readers caught Polygon out on their ethics policy and called them out on it.
Rightfully so they adjusted the score accordingly.
Highlighting that reviewers should really review under retail conditions with these type of games, not play on EA's luxury PR servers before release.

DRM for a single player, its just not on, it was bad enough with the multiplayer bit of Diablo 3, but as usual loads of people will bitch about EA's policies and practices, then hand over their 40 quid.

Because they want to play the game it's just too bad that EA won't allow them to play.
What I find even more fascinating is that EA have turned off specific features in the game to get it running.
Like the cheetah speed option for example, I'm amazed that they have that much power over the single player components of the game.

That was my point about this game. I feel the low score is justified. Game look fantastic, DRM is death.

Yeah i feel the same, i really would like to buy this game as it looks like something i could really put a lot of time into and Evilboris makes it sound really fun but i refuse to support this always on DRM and if i was to buy Sim City then i cant really moan ever again about DRM because i have helped support it. What i really hate about always on DRM is that in some point in the future EA suddenly decide to switch of the server then thats it, can never play again and who knows if this will be in 5 or 10 years time, unless they of course patch in offline play but i wouldn't hold my breath.

said before in other places that drm will essentially kill the idea of games becoming retro

Also say for example even games i COULD play like skyrim/borderlands 2 in 10 years will i still be able to get the dlc and patches ?

as far as sim city goes i plan to wait and see

Maybe places like gog.com will be used to repackage and sell us Sim City in 7 or 8 years time.

Probably nobody can get on the servers still.
EA said the EU launch would be smooth they added another 4 servers but it's still not working.

That ain't happening, it's not even off-peak hours and all the servers are busy.
