    Sonic 1 (Version 2.0) (iOS/Android) review

This appeared out of nowhere. This is by Christian Whitehead, who was behind the excellent port of Sonic CD to all formats last year (which added 16:9 widescreen, play as Tails, both soundtracks and more). It was a perfect example of how a retro re-release should be handled.

This is pretty much the same deal, albeit arguably significant given how many ports of Sonic 1 already exist. Still, this is a massive upgrade over the mediocre emulations that already exist. The game runs in widescreen at 60fps, adds a spin dash as well as the ability to play as Tails and Knuckles, crystal clear remastering of the soundtrack, time attack mode, save states and achievements.

There's less to see here because everybody has played this game to death, but it's the most perfect port of the game you could ask for. Here's hoping it's released for formats other than smartphones.

It's as perfect as can be. Betterthan the original IMO. Full 10 points from me. We just need it on a real console. At the moment I'm having to connect the phone to the TV and use an app that will allow me to use Wii remotes with the game.

Aye, there's literally nothing negative to say about if as long as you're looking for the best possible port (rather than anything more elaborate like a remake).

I'm no fan of touchscreen gaming though. The best port of this game desperately deserves a console release.

I might give it a do. Xperia Play ftw.

It's a gorgeous port. Silky smooth and just looks and sounds great with lovely presentation. But the lack of physical controls will always be a handicap for me on iOS.

                And this

Played it earlier and using the screen to control has always sucked

                Shame really

I haven't played this, but sonic cd played fantastic on a touch screen. They did a fantastic job. If its by the same people I imagine this plays great too.

have to ditto the comments, lovely port - cant use touch controls...

Thankfully my PS3 controller on my HTC One works a treat and plays the game great.
