Beyond Two Souls DEMO PS3 review

Just played through the demo (from USA Store) and have to say I am impressed.

You get two play through two stages of the game, one in a hospital (The Experiment) and the other (Hunted) is an action packed chase. The story is the main pull hear and although in a demo it is hard to get a feel for where you are in main event, in Hunted, it is compelling. The use of music and QTE's together with a sense of urgency have you one the edge of your seat as you try to determine what to do next.

The voice and character acting are really good, graphically it is not quite up to Last Of Us standards, but very good and believable nonetheless. Most character movements in the demo are determined by QTE's but there is additional movement for another character, your "soul". I managed to get a grip with the controls quite quick (there is a mini 'tutorial' at the beginning of each of the two levels). The action is varied and in the and I never felt trapped by the controls.

The demo is well worth a play through and it is really exciting in Hunted. Another game I will have to order now!!

    UPDATE:

Played through it again. So you begin in the Hospital and there are some basic tasks to do and once done you are taken to a training exercise which effectively teaches you how to move the character in combat. Then it is onto the main quest, being Hunted.

Your actions do have an impact on how you progress through the stage. Without giving anything away, there are some moments when, if you perform a certain task, a different path is taken. So worth playing the demo at least twice just to see where this will take you.

Play mechanics are a combination of button press and quick movements in the correct direct with the dual analogue sticks when the action goes into slow motion

My only gripe is the use of SixAxis controls for some parts, they always remind me why I can't stand "shaking' controllers and to be honest I think they didn't need it IMHO. That aside, top stuff.

I daren't say anymore about the story as that would ruin the Demo for you.

    UPDATE:

Demo is now on UK PSN Store

I think we're all past Cage's hyp(erbol)e. That said, even with the Simon-sez gameplay and plot holes his games are entertaining interactive movies.

This. It is an entirely new genre in my opinion, not really gameplay more about playing your own story - like those books with the little choices at the bottom of the page.

It is an amazing game aesthetically and I am sure although not a traditional game would have you gripped from start to finish.

I really enjoyed the demo but I would say bad timing on the release date which will stop me from playing it till it is on Gaikai. The motorcycle section was a bit dodgy too, not sure who did the mechanics for that but it felt like Outrun on Windows 95 with better graphics.

Loved the demo when I played it, deleted it after one play through to minimize spoilers. So I forgot to try playing it with the companion app, don't even know if it works with it or not being a demo. Has anyone tried it? Might be a way to get the missus on it with me.

You've described FMV games, like Psychic Detective on PS1.

I remember when everyone hated FMV games.

Personally, I loved them. So I'm not criticising you, but it's disappointing that only now do people appreciate what I was enjoying years ago.

PS1 era FMV gaames were crazy awesome. Like Psychic Detective and Fox Hunt.

Don't diss it, Dave. You've got to play it through 4 times to unlock ultra-nightmare mode before the combat ups-the-ante, and then the controls and combos really click.

Hurray, Waggling a joypad and pressing a few buttons during a QTE isnt a game, its a interactive movie at best, and if i wanted that, i'd go back to the king of that, Dragon's Lair, probably 10 times more enjoyable than this pretentious drivel.

I only think David Cage is a the video game industry as the movie industry would totally ignore him and drive him out of town for his story telling, its totally rank.

Got the full game now (Tin Edition) and have started my quest. Think i I will mainly play in the dark as it suits this type of game. The sun is blazing into my window right now.

I have played through the first 'chapters' if that is the correct word and am enjoying. Yes I know it isn't a FPS but I like this type of slow paced stuff now and then so looking forward to the more later.

I you played the demo then you will be used to the controls already whic it makes it quicker to get going.
