Er...he was Jumpman, but point taken.

And SMB3 is tougher than SMW. It isn't better.

I've realised I've only ever completed Super Mario Land (GB) and Mario 64.

I've probably played a few others at one time or another, but not extensively.

Each to their own obviously, but you'd really put Mario Golf & Mario Tennis before the likes of Super Mario Sunshine, SMB 2 Japan/Lost Levels and at least one NSMB (Probably NSMB Wii or NSMBU)?

For me, no Mario Golf or Tennis makes my all-time Mario list.

Sunshine is on the list above mario golf/tennis, SMB2 jap despite being great and brutally difficult, isnt sufficiently different to SMB(the one i grew up on) to deserve a place, and i despise NSMB with a passion...with the WiiU version holding up best.

Mario golf and tennis were fantastic.

I disagree, while i adore SMW(my most played mario outside of SMK), i liked everything about SMB3 better, aside from the cape being a brilliant touch over the tanooki suite.

The difficulty made it a true challenge, it pushed the old NES hardware to the maximum, and it just had this magical feeling that one upped SMW for me.

So many little almost hidden touches.

It was an absolute idea factory of a game.

To be fair, so is 3D World.

It's always going to be more difficult to feel that 'magic' as a jaded adult rather than an excited kid.

SMB 3 was regularly rated above World back in the day iirc. Plenty of people still prefer it now, it was a huge leap forward at the time.

I played both SMW and SMB3 as a kid, but others like sunshine and galaxy i played as a mid to late 20's adult and still felt that magic...

There just isn't as much going on in 3d world for me, it looks nice, sound decent enough(i agree with the retro style music being preferable mind), and has fun levels....but the ideas are spread thin for me.

The main downer for me is the perspective, i just dont think it works as well as 2d, or proper 360 degree 3D. Being able to telescope and see most of the map also takes something away for me too, in the old 2d levels you always wondered what could be where on the map, and never really knew if you'd missed something, so crafty were the hidden keyholes/pipes etc.

Don't get me wrong i still really enjoyed it overall, but its definitely quite basic when judged in the same company as those games.

I also miss the days where mario games that were primarily designed for kids, didn't necessarily treat you, the gamer, like one with the level of challenge on offer.

This goes double for modern mario kart games.

As for 3D world though, its still a decent game and head and shoulders above the recent mario offerings we've had since galaxy.

Just my two cents worth, given that 10's are flying around everywhere you look.

SMW > SMB3 for me all the way.

I'm going to try and get the other half to have a go on this with me tonight. Wish me luck.

I think I'd still like to see another proper 2D mario game. Something has always felt 'wrong' when 3d models etc are used. OLD SKOOL.

I didn't think the 2D Super Mario U (or Luigi U) was that great, sure it was fun but not fantastic in my opinion.
3D game was a million times better to me.

2d mario games are NOT to be judged by New super mario series.

Lets face it despite being serviceable, they are dollop.

Bit OT, but did anybody who preordered at Game actually get the furry sleeve?

Not really. The gold level challenges highlight the masterful design that went into some of the stages.
