    Freedom Wars - Vita review

In Freedom Wars you play a prisoner with a million years on their sentence in the post apocalypse. To reduce your sentence you undertake missions to gather resources, rescue citizens and thin out enemy numbers.

Combat is split between melee and ranged. You also have thorn which is like a grappling hook you use for traversal, subduing monsters and ripping weapons of your enemies. There is Monster hunter like coop though you can bring AI chums with you into missions. You are always accompanied by your Accessory; a robot (maybe) helper that you can customise and equip with different weapons.

There is a hub world with terrible fetch quests and merchants.

That's the high level description done, let's get down to business.

Lost Planet and Lost Planet 2 are two of the coolest shooters of the last gen. Anyone that thinks differently is lying or an idiot, your choice. This game feels like a weird sequel that eschews the mechs and T-ENG and builds on the grappling hook while giving you a valid melee strategy. The gun play feels very similar (you can run into the screen and fire behind you) and the grappling hook now allows you to chain moves while in the air.

The battles are fast, enemies hit hard and when you chain a number of leaping melee attacks and then rip the artillery cannon of a bipedal demon mech thing you feel like a bad ass. The combat is great in a Japanese action game kind of way.

The between mission stuff sees you wandering around a hub world with certain restrictions placed on you. There is some sort of meta commentary going on about video game rewards and unlocks but I won't spoil it for you. They are surprising, funny and frustrating in equal measure but worth experiencing for yourself.

The game looks great and the character customisation seems to have loads of unlocks. The weapons can be merged to upgrade them so you never feel like you are collecting junk. Everything can be used even if it is just to donate to your home city to increase its standing.

Is anyone playing this? The game is really cool and looks like it will keep me going for a fair bit. Sorry, bit of a rushed first play, trying to get it did while tea is cooking.

In my hour of gaming this week I did the first tutorial quest and that's about as far as I've gotten.
I like that it's entirely voiced in Japanese but with English subs.

I bought this off PSN as (hurrah) it was cheaper than a physical copy.

It looks gorgeous! The character design is nice and the larger enemies look pretty cool.

I've changed the controls to marksman (or whatever it is) so that firing the ranged weapon is on the R button. I find that much easier.

I ordered this on Friday, but it's been stuck on processing for a few days now on Shopto...

Done the first couple of training missions. Can't wait to get into the game proper.

Love the rope thing attached to my character's arm. Reminds me of the grappling hook in the Tenchu games, which was probably my favorite accessory ever.

This has been a stunning-looking game so far.

I've played a good deal more of it. The battles and the customisation continue to be excellent but between each mission are garbage run-around-the-hub-speaking-to-anime-stereotypes quests which are so boring and tedious. The battles keep me pushing through though.
