I can't help but feel I'm doing something really wrong with this. I'm bashing my head against the boss in chapter 7 currently, and I'm not sure if I should be grinding my team up, using my Skell, getting Skells for the whole team, or what. Side quests are a pain in the ass and aren't really giving me much to make it worthwhile, and so many of the bounty quests / areas I'm exploring are populated by things way too tough to even consider fighting. I really want to finish this but it's driving me crazy; I get the impression it's just going to get worse too.

Get to level 30 and buy a Mastema for about 800k, use the M-Sniper to 1HK most things below level 20. Keep working on affinity quests and other missions until Elma and Lin are lvl30 and get them Skells too.

Word of warning, it's better to get out of your skell and get killed than to lose the skell as your insurance will only replace it 3 times for you. If Team mates lose their Skells, just go back to the BLADE barracks, and use the Barracks Hanger menu and they'll all get replaced for free provided that they still have at least 1 insurance replacement remaining.

if i remember correctly the chapter 7 boss is split into two parts, the first on foot and the 2nd half you can use our skells.
just make sure you use your battle points to level up arts/skills and equip decent armour. i remember having 3-4 skells by the time i went into chapter 7

Thanks both - I ended up smashing through that barrier last night, starting by buying a level 30 Skell, allowing me to power level my other chars to 30, and then buying them level 30 Skells too. The boss took about 20 seconds after that...

Finished the last story mission earlier - what a fight! Last section took me 4 tries and dropping the difficulty level once.
Still so much more to do and so many skell weapons to unlock. I've clocked 100 hours so far and I think I'll be hammering away for at least 130-140.

Any advice on where I should be spending my cash before the final chapter? I'm there now, and have found a nice spot that's allowed me to grind to the level cap, but I'm still rocking level 30 skells and pretty underpowered ground gear. I've only got about 1.5m in the bank though, so alternatively if there's places I can farm for gear that's good too...

Level 50 skells to make the first 2 parts of the last chapter easier, but ultimately the last part is on foot so you'll need the best gear you can get.

Don't rush to finish the game, take some time to increase affinity with everyone, unlock all the team members (I've still not got all of them), etc. Get the 6 AMs maxed out to make the best gear available.
Tickets you get from squad tasks can be used to exchange for indigen parts that you may not have access to yet btw, and is an easier way of getting things.

I tend to choose gathering missions that I've already got the items for so i can easily increase my party's affinity without too much faff.

Purchased this from Argos recently, but it's still sat in my unplayed pile as I feel like I've got to download the data packs for a better playing experience (less loading time, etc.) and that means buying an external HDD.

I've been on the 3DS game as well but got a little tired of the grind at level 35-ish.

Like I've mentioned already, at about chapter 6 when things are starting to get samey you get your skell license and stamp around in a giant robot and the whole thing is fresh again. It really opens up the world as you can cross the sea to the other continent, but also ups the toughness of the enemies so it doesn't get too easy.
Same again when you get the ability to fly, and the music is cool.

Oh wow, it has been 10 years since the WiiU had its only Xenoblade title?
Anyway, just completed Xenoblade Chronicles X Definitive Edition.
The base game took about 50 hours, with most affinity and sidemissions skipped, and beelined for some of the upgrades you get (Skells, their flight module, and the laser cannon back weapon), though I did play some of the missions related to the two new characters.
Before starting chapter 13, exclusive to this version, I spent some time online grinding for materials to craft the bunnygirl outfits, a few high-level Skells, and a few superweapons you get after completing chapter 12, where the story stopped in the original WiiU version. That and the whole final chapter took another 20-something hours.

I don't remember online at all on WiiU, but Definitive Edition offers some interesting missions that let you grind experience, money, and miranium easily, and at the same time you get material tickets you can exchange for rare items to complete missions, or much more probably, for items you can get onyl through crafting.
Overall the game doesn't feel that different from the original, though I suspect loading is much faster; there are a few some QoL improvements, but compared to XC2 and XC3, you do feel XCX is less refined in interface and combat mechanics. The interface has been revamped to fit everything onto one screen, but some screens cram way too much information for their own good and fonts can get really tiny when in portable mode.

Chapter 13 is rather short, probably a tad longer than XC1's expansion,

and unfortunately you get a ton of long cutscenes in the first two thirds, and what you have to do amounts to fetch quests. The last third is more interesting and features new locations. Storywise, the loose ends in vanilla XCX are tied up, chapter 13 itself ends in yet another cliffhanger that teases XCX2...and I admit that I wouldn't mind a new sci-fi XC game with giant robots you can pilot freely. There's a very tenuous connection to XC3, but I think it's more of a case of the director's fixation with his usual themes.

Also, the music is still insufferable.
