      quite a lot (maybe 80 or something? they aren't that great though. you are better off making your own and finding people you like and playing their games.

      After playing this for a while I;ve noticed that theres a lot missing in terms of creation.

      No slope tiles at all
      no checkpoints
      you can't have larva in none larva stages / water in none water etc
      only a few enemies
      music is limited (would be brilliant if you could make your own tunes ala mario paint)
      no desert or ice or woodland themes
      choice of blocks per stage is very limited (would be great to be able to draw your own block graphics)
      no secret walls
      no custom objects like seesaws, balloons, those saws that chase you in mario world.


      It's a good game but i really get the feeling they are holding back. they are probably going to stick it in mario maker 2...

            Really? Mine's still drip-feeding content on 1.01. Do I need to create level after level or just put the work into one? (Not having warp pipes is very frustrating.)

              you use all the stuff that you've been given in the most recent unlock (just place it in the level and dick around with it for 10 mins)

              then build a big area of tiles (whatever you fancy - blocks, item blocks, whatever) copy and past that big block of stuff about 5 times using the cut and paste option and you'll hear a van and get a message saying early delivery.

              Rinse repeat, takes about 10 mins per unlock. I had everything unlocked without even really noticing!

                My copy arrived today and have been playing a bit this evening. The layout and controls are excellent in their simplicity. It is very easy to construct and needs no real explanation aside from the shaky thing to change the nature of items. And the game takes you into these things really nicely.

                Played through the first 10-Mario challenge and they were good levels. And played a few the user created levels and found a few good ones already.

                So all good with Mario Maker.

                My only concern, and it could be invalid as I'm obviously only presented with the first batch of tools, is how limited it might be. It doesn't appear to have many backgrounds or music for example so how bored will we get with those? The grid system is fantastic because it just works but will that then limit variety of what can be done? Doesn't seem to have checkpoints (that could be a big one if that is the case). I can't help but compare it to the freedom of Sound Shapes and how different things could be made, even backgrounds, which you construct yourself. This could be too pre-made. But I hope this won't be the case. I'm so early on in it and have only played through some levels so it is likely there will be far more to it than I'm seeing now.

                One question - can I control what comes out of the ? mushrooms when I put them down?

                Edit: A second question - the book has a key symbol with numbers next to things. What is that?

                  I agree, the stuff it lacks soon becomes apparent. It's a shame really because the editors on other games are infinitely more robust but it seems nintendo were more focused on simplicity over content.

                  It would have been good if there was an option for expert mode where you could have access to everything and go all out. I'd personally like to make my own tunes, mix elements from different level themes together etc.

                  It's a fun little diversion but it's no where near what it could have been and I feel like the game isn't allowing me to compete with nintendos own designs.

                  The numbers in the book are codes for levels that you can enter.

                    This game is brilliant. I haven't even contemplated playing anything else since I got it.

                    It's amazing how quickly the time goes. I tinker with a level for what I think is about fifteen minutes, then look at the clock and an hour has gone.

                    I love the 100 level challenge. Almost none of the levels are anything like as good as Nintendo's, not surprisingly, but that is part of the appeal. The randomness of not knowing which game and theme the next level will be, or whether it will be a doddle, an impossible death trap, a great level or a pile of arse, is fantastic.

                    When I get up I switch the Wii u on at once to see if anyone has played my levels overnight.

                    My only, tiny gripe is that coins and 1-up mushrooms are pretty much redundant.

                      Coins are useful to show directions or when transformed into blocks thanks to the P-Switch.

                          I havnt played this enough yet, but what i find a tad dissapointing is the fact your always making one off levels. What i love about the mario titles, or platformers in general, is the world map. How each level evolves as your prgressing through the map and how the theme of the level changes, telling a story almost.
                          It would had been so lovely if there was some sort of map editor with the ability to chain levels together, adding in boss levels etc.
                          I guess thats all for future sequels etc.

                          Is it just me, or do others feel this too?

                            I've played it a ton now and all I see at this point is the stuff that's missing.

                            You can cobble something passable together but you can't make the mario games you always wanted.
