    Yakuza 5 [PS3] review review

There's a full review up on the site based on the Japanese release here, but I can't see any first play threads for it bar the demo? ANYWAY, it's finally here - in English, no less.

Having come to this straight off the back of 3/4/Dead Souls, a lot of the improvements were very obvious to me; a new engine, new menus, smoother transitions into fights, and so on. Given it's now a three year old game it's still a little dated, but were you ever really playing for the technical achievement?

It still takes the approach from 4 of having a range of characters to play as, but on top of the usual subquests for each there's also whole other side stories, with main and sub missions within. You actually start off as Kiryu this time round, and his taxi driving ventures are so fleshed out and such competent segments of game that it almost feels bad to label them in with the usual 'tonnes of mini-games' praise. There's still plenty of that too though!

I'm now about 40 hours in, and onto part 4. The story is, in usual fashion, great - full of surprises, intrigue and crazy feats of machismo. I really can't think of any other game that's hooked me quite as much as this in recent memory, and right now it's in a very good spot for being my favourite thing played all year long.

Only way to play in English is via the PSN download version. The discount is for PS+ rather than a first week /pre-order thing I think?

NA had a 10% pre-order discount. I'm just waiting for something more sizeable.

What's the difficulty like compared to Yakuza 1 and 2? I thought the first two games had the difficulty spot on and the games after made combat too easy. Not sure if hard mode gets the balance right.

It's been a long time since I played 1, and 2 is the only one from the main series I've missed out on. But, it's not particularly challenging - you're given a lot of options for how to deal with most situations, and although some fights are quite tricky in parts you can always slowly chip away at someone's health easily enough. With that in mind though, it's probably the post-game stuff that'll be where the real challenge lies. So far the hardest thing I've had to do has been

                    Haruka's comedy side mission

60 hours in now, and on to the finale. Loving this to bits, can't wait to see how it ends.

Ironic that a 3 year old game is pushing it for my game of the year.. Not really it is yakuza

Finished! 74 hours, 100% of sub and side stories, but an overall completion rate of 46.98% - but no chance am I going for the full 100%.

                          Ending:

mostly really good; but the last scene did not leave you with the cliffhanger I think it wanted to!

. Story-wise I enjoyed the journey more than the pay-off at the end, but on the whole I loved the game completely - probably my favourite thing I've played this year.

I'm getting there it's not quite my game of the year ROTTR just pips it for me but it's a very fitting send off for the PS3
