    DOOM

Well this is odd, posting about this game on a late format (Switch) when there had already been discussion on all the other formats. Others can tell me about the other formats but I got this on Switch for Christmas and have a few things to note. The first is that this is really good fun, very violent with a great sense of pace. The glory kills give a real sense of rhythm to the game, which I didn't expect. The game is gory to the point where it quickly becomes meaningless - probably a good thing as I might find myself uncomfortable if I applied any empathy here. It's a fun shooter. It's like Doom, then Doom 3 but opening everything wide to get it more like Doom again... if that makes any sense. I can feel both the progression and the step back into the past and it works.

On the Switch, however, the limitations of the system are very apparent. It performs well in handheld and impresses as a handheld game but, even then, it doesn't run at full res. It looks soft and slightly smeary and that's a little disappointing. Reminds me of some Vita games that just couldn't quite reach the heights the screen could have delivered.

On a TV, you can see clearer the roughness. Again, it doesn't seem to be full HD (not sure what res it is running at) and some textures are very low res. There are places where, on another game, you'd think it hadn't yet loaded in the textures. My last Doom was Doom 3 on PC quite a number of years ago and my memory of that game is that it looked a lot better than this, if very contained. It's not a visual showcase for the Switch.

That said, I haven't played this game on any other system so I can't compare. I don't know how polished or not it is meant to look.

But the game plays really well and is very different to the other Switch offerings so, overall, I'm happy to have it. The more variety here the better as far as I'm concerned and I will happily live with the lower specs to have the handiness of walking away with my game whenever I want.

Switch Doom has been updated with optional motion controls. They are really good at the default settings because it’s pretty subtle, so you use the stick for aiming as normal but can make small adjustments or track an enemy with the motion controls. I like it.

Does that work with the Pro controller too?

I got Doom on PC a while back, I enjoyed it a lot I think my only complaints were that towards the end it tailed off (in that once you found a weapon that was it for new stuff to find even though still quite a bit of the game to go)

Also I felt could have done with more variety, While i know it was set on Mars could have done some stuff on the moons or how about a level where they have a forest growing in a Giant Glass area to provide oxygen or something

Not 100% certain but can't think why it wouldn't.

Started this on Ultra settings at 1440p and 165fps last night. Totally ball-blasting. I can't say it's as fun as Brutal DOOM so far, but they've stolen the Glory Kills from Brutal, which is a bit cheeky.

Good gam this one. Really meaty gunplay and tight arenas make for a nicely streamlined, tight experience. Need to finish it off soon.

Just finished this on Xbox One X having done it previously on PS4 a while back.

Just bloody good fun. Hold down the right trigger, make bangbang noises until things go red and squishy fun.

                Looks great in 4K too.

I'd done this on PC back when it came out so trying it again on Switch has been interesting. The resolution and some texture quality has definitely taken a hit (playing in handheld mode) but god damned if it isn't impressive as a port. It works so flawlessly that I'm struggling to think of a handheld FPS that's better. I've heard Wolfenstein 2 is a decent port but the trouble there is that game mostly sucks, really enjoying this replay though.

Yep, it plays brilliantly on the Switch. I found the control to be fantastic once they added in the motion controls which, for me, are perfect. The stick is still the main control but just having those small adjustments possible with motion really improves accuracy. But yeah, the textures take a big hit and some drops in resolution are noticeable, giving a very soft look in places. Still, as you say, it's impressive and none of the compromises affected the game for me.

I was struggling to find an appropriate thread for this, maybe it deserves its own thread, but the recent re-release of Doom/Doom II seems to be the definitive of this absolute classic of a game.

The console versions now run at 120 FPS and have full MOD support (well, except Nintendo who is still babying you with moderation) - even if you've played the original to death, with the new soundtrack and official new episodes it's time to revisit this one.

As a bonus, if you bought the 2019 releases, you're getting a free upgrade to this new version. Digital Foundry have done a video on it here ... I don't think Alex has looked at the mouse settings properly as the speed of rotation can be adjusted down - the default is a bit too fast, but that may also be down to acceleration settings in Windows. I didn't find it a problem once I'd reduced the sensitivity anyway.

I've been playing on PC gamepass using a joypad to recreate the most time i spent with doom which was the Final Doom demo disc on one of the first none OPM magazines(PS Plus?), and then getting the double jewel case box 2nd hand years later.

Playing on 'Hurt me Plenty', planning to go through all the expansions while trying to find all the secrets, finished Doom 1 quite easily, currently on Doom 2, map 11 getting filtered hard... you really can't just spam ammo recklessly and traps contain 10-20 mobs at a time. Also had to turn off gyro controls, seems to default them on if your pad supports it.

One day i hope we get a Doom'99, play a set of Doom Levels with ghosts of others sending their killed demons to your game.

Always great to have an excuse to play through some Doom again.

16 new levels, 187 mission maps in total. Yummy. That's a lot of Ultra Violence to dish out and secrets to find. Like Tobal I plan to run through every map with 100% secrets. On UV though. Nightmare is a bit too much for me, but UV has always been the way I play Doom, and the way I feel Doom should be played lol.

                          There's also the id Vault.

"Dive into the id Vault and explore concept art, gameplay footage taken from DOOM + DOOM II’s development, early versions of weapons and items left on the cutting room floor and even playable levels taken from during the game’s original development."

                          Some interesting stuff in there.

Two of id Software’s iconic shooters are now here in one package, enhanced and with added features.
