    Quake (PC, Sonys, Xboxes, Switch)

Yeah, this a first play for Quake. Couldn't resist. Anyway I guess the original is lost in the great purge.

Quake is a first person shooter game by a company called id and a legendary programmer who was well on the way to sainthood before he went to Oculus Rift/Facebook. It is among the first 'true' 3D games with polygonal level design and enemies - moving things on from the 2.5D glories of Doom and Duke Nukem. You play as some guy who is armed to the teeth in order to stop inter-dimensional monsters spilling through some experimental portal technology that has gone wrong - exactly the same B movie schtick as Doom and indeed Half-Life (the latter of which is noted as having a good story, for some reason). Notable features of the game include blistering speed and complex, almost puzzle-like levels. But I think everyone here knows this, so...

Why is it appearing here, now? Well, it got given a surprise reissue a few weeks ago to mark its quarter century, and the improvements and additions are well worth noting. In a nutshell they are:

    VISUALS
New lighting and shadows, increased resolution options, enhanced modelling, consistent 60FPS, anti-aliasing, ambient occlusion, and various other sliders and visual junk you can mess around with and which I only half understand. You can also switch it all off to enjoy the original ugly.

    CONTENT
The game features the main game and the 2 official DLCs ('Scourge of Armagon', 'Dissolution of Eternity'), as well as the 10 level 'Dimension of the Past' commemorative package that was released when the game was a mere 20 years old. It also has a brand new set of DLC levels called 'Dimension of the Machine'. So there's actual new game here! I guess that makes it the definitive Quake collection until the half-centenary edition arrives. Anyway you can play any of these levels straight off the bat.

    MULTIPLAYER
Cross-play for all platforms noted above, both competitive (deathmatch) and cooperative multiplayer. Works really well with a quickstart option and match browser for custom matches or private lobbies, but is best if you just set up your own room (they fill really quickly). Local split-screen multiplayer as well, for 2-4. You can't combine local MP with online, however. Tried every MP option and they work seamlessly. Online cooperative in particular is a lot of fun. I did a quick count and there are about 80 multiplayer maps to choose from. The brand new DotM maps are really top notch. MP has got its hooks in my lad, who is an Overwatch fanatic.

Other stuff: extensive control and HUD customization options. I'm playing on the Switch with a bit of gyro and aim assist and I'm not being totally embarrassed in cross-play with PC folk.

Not sure what else to say, really. I'm really enjoying working through the campaign. The levels are fantastic. They look wonderful and are buttery smooth to play. Relatively small but so well designed, and packed with atmosphere and secrets. It's Quake. But the best version of it. 7 quid.

I have been playing some of it on Switch and it’s fantastic. The game runs beautifully and yet still feels totally like it was - the best of all worlds. And it’s amazing how well the game holds up in terms of design. It plays brilliantly. Too many ogres though.

That's odd. I haven't had any trouble (from Switch with crossplay enabled, and its mostly PC players on). Have you tried setting up your own public room? I find they're usually pretty quick to fill up.

If it had a box I'd recommend this was printed on it as a simple way of letting the people know.

Quake was hugely important to me; it was the reason to get a job and save up for fancier parts for my computer, one of the formative online experiences, but also the reason to lug a PC over to someone's house where we could all set up a LAN for the entire weekend. I've only dabbled in single player with this so far, but even that's been a very enjoyable trip down memory lane, albeit one where a controller doesn't come close to matching up to keyboard and mouse, and my reaction times are 25 years worse off. One thing I really love with the single player is how you actually dodge things (rather than just seeing someone in a distance point a gun and you then taking damage), and in general how fast it all moves. What a game.

Firstly, this thread did not come up when I searched "Quake" to try and find it again. Even filtering by titles.

              Anyway...

I should really give this a try. Quake is a weird game, in my memory.

Like all PC gamers at the time, I was really excited about it. I had the shareware version (presumably on a magazine coverdisc) and I saved up for weeks to afford the full game.

But once I had the game... I actually didn't like it all that much? It was a big disappointment. Weirdly I think I convinced myself that I did enjoy it, because it was the big game of the summer (some would say decade) but still... People say it was atmospheric but I just always found it drab, dark and dingy.

I loved it on a technical level. I spent countless hours in map editors and playing mods, or Total Conversions like Malice for Quake. It taught me a huge amount about videogame development. But I can't shift the idea that all of this was because I was trying to get something out of it

An important factor in all this, however, is that I had no access to multiplayer Quake. We were on dial-up back then, which was expensive per-minute, slow (56kbps modem which barely got a tenth of that speed) and lossy (huge packet loss created insufferable lag). I got to play it a couple of times at a cybercafe on a LAN with some friends, and it was amazing. Only time I really "got it".

By comparison, a year or so later I got a voodoo card and got Unreal, and that totally clicked with me.

That reminds me. The Switch version comes with the deliriously re-coloured Nintendo 64 version, with a CRT filter to make it looks especially garish and over-saturated. You can download it gratis from the 'Add Ons' section of the menu.

Got the PC version on a whim, playing it in short bursts when I have some spare time...I have it set at 4K and unlocked framerate, and every time I start it up I ask myself if I shouldn't set it to 320x240, disable all kinds of AA, and limit the framerate to 10fps just like I played it on the good ol' 486.

I'm not an FPS person, and seeing how fast you slide across levels was quite a surprise. It's a very simple game compared to waht's available today and when enemies are on screen, the action is fast and satisfying. However, when there are no enemies on screen, levels all look the same and the game becomes kinda boring...it feels like short burst of adrenaline linked by absolutely bog-standard levels.
The funniest weapon to use is the quad nailgun, but nails are scarce and you have to save them for the random Shambler you might encounter. Every time I'm tempted to turn on unlimited ammo for some soothing fast-nailing.

Had a lot of fun on the Ogre Citadel and Crypt of Decay yesterday. The twisty turny-ness of the maps and unlock routes is ingenious, like a proto Dark Souls. I hadn't realised the influence before. Lurvin' it. Also set up an online deathmatch in the low-grav Ziggurat Vertigo level. Hilarious. Deadly fast on the ground but once you jump or get bounced into the air by pads or splash damage you're just floating with limited control. Guys pinging each other out of the air with rocket launchers. Raining gibs, it was. One dude was laughing so hard into his mic I had to mute him.

Just tried Scourge of Armagon, which... does a very good job of reminding you how finely executed the design of the base game is.

Hmmm...the DLC not so great, then? (I haven't got to it yet).

Crypt of Decay is kicking my ass. That top bridge with the ogres. I beat them and then turn that corner and I’m done for.

If that's the one with the arrow traps firing down the centre, that's a real killer. But

there's a quad damage you can get via a very narrow ledge just to the left side of the bridge as you go out into the open (look behind as you go out). You need to jump over.
