    Guardians of the Galaxy, Xbox-Playstation

After the mess that was Avengers, I really didn't see myself picking this up even after seeing the reveal, but then the reviews came in and they where all pretty positive, which really took me by surprise.

Fire up Star-Lord’s jet boots for a wild ride across the cosmos in this third-person action-adventure game, a fresh take on Marvel’s Guardians of the Galaxy. With the unpredictable Guardians at your side, blast your way from one explosive situation to another, with original and iconic Marvel characters caught in a struggle for the fate of the universe. You got this. Probably.

I love the guardians of the galaxy comics and if your a fan this really delivers on that world. First and foremost this is a massive departure from the Avengers game, This is more in the vein of an action rpg style game, their is no live service, no grinding and a more consistent focus on creating a strong 20 hour-ish single player campaign. It doesn't feel like Avongers either as they have gone for a more comic book style to the cast. Gamora in particular bears little to no resemblance to her on screen counterpart both in attitude and look. Peter quill is also comic book accurate too which works really well here I have nothing against either of the actors that play them in the films but I'm glad they went their own way here.

The Combat is nothing super new but it is fun, you don't directly control anyone but Peter Quill but you can constantly call on your team mates for back up. Groot pins enemy's down with his vines, rocket acts like a smartbomb dealing out big damage, Drax jumps on stuff and stabs it repeatedly and gamora slashes and jumps around like a ninja. They all fight alongside you too and will also present context sensitive team up moments which are always fun and don't overstay their welcome. Things stay fresh with Peter too as you have a really steady combat tree for upgrades to his skills and weapons.

What elevates this and makes it something special though is the locations you explore and the script which are top notch, you really get a feeling like your part of this team and the narrative consistently barrels along giving you plenty of opportunity to mold and grow how well your team works together. This is a very narrative heavy game so if your wanting pure combat it might not be for you.

Narrative is handled by a tell tale style text tree options that give you a limited time to choose an option. These have real world consequences and change the game up quite a bit. For example one section sees you stuck at the wrong side of a chasm do you get drax to throw rocket over to hack a bridge or try to find another way across. if you side with Drax and let him thrown rocket over rocket will be super pissed with you and it will affect your overall relationship with him and demotivate him. You really have to keep the peace at times and so far I'm really impressed with how good the writing is.

We really do need more stuff like this well written non gouging single player games without a sniff of live service it really dose feel like a solid out of ten so far.

This is definitely on my list now after all the positive reviews and impressions its getting, technically though it seems it needs some work still even in performance modes, hopefully they polish it some more.

I've watched several reviews now and heard nothing but great things.

This is on my radar but I think I'm going to hold off until the new year as I feel this is going to get a few patch updates and also the possibility of going into Game Pass.

I've not had any technical issues so far their was a week one patch so maybe this fixed a few of the crashing issues that have been brought up in the reviews, I'm playing this on the ps5 and it looks amazing in places, the first area in particular has a real sense of scale and style that make you feel like a real space adventurer.

Can you play this couch co-op?

          EDIT: No.

Is Guardians of the Galaxy co op?
"No, at time of writing Guardians of the Galaxy has no co op mode or capabilities. It can't even be played online - it's solely single player and as far as we know, there's no plans by Eidos or Square Enix to change that in the future."

With it being an RPG of sorts I'm not sure it would work as a co-op game. If you think about how mass effect works your kind of half way their you kind of get a 50 50 split walking and talking to shooting, as i said above its not a pure action game its very story and dialogue driven and all the better for it as it helps build the world and give personality to the cast.

So finished this off last night and Loved it from start to finish their are some truly amazing boss battles, a good mix of enemy's, and game-play that keeps you on your toes, if i have any criticism its that some of the enemy's can be a bit of a bullet sponge, but as you power up it gets less of an issue. Towards the end i was unleashing my team on the enemy's and ripping through their health bars. The script is good the music is on point with some fantastic tracks with a realy good mix of 70s and 80s rock and pop, its well worth exploring the Milarno too as their are quite a few easter eggs and stuff to find on the ship as well as a jukebox that lets you choose from all the music in the game.

The galaxy hopping is this fun and it even manages to throw in a bit of Space Combat to to add to the scale of proceedings. Its worth exploring too as scattered through out each level are alternative costumes for all the characters, its crazy i know "how are these are not In app purchases" their quite unique as well and a lot of them are based on the comics with a bit of info behind each costumes first appearance.

Was playing this on Performance mode and it was solid as a rock throughout, They added RayTracing to this too in the last patch, so it looks even nicer on the PS5 now, no crashes no bugs just a fun old school action rpg really wish more devs would put this much effort into single player games.

I'm definitely picking this one up in the new year but I've got way too many games on the go right now. I see it's down to £28 at most places for black Friday...
