Have put about 40 hours into this now and definitely enjoying it. There's been the move from sprites to polygons which has its plus and minuses (as the Switch struggles to keep 30 FPS at 1080P in the beatiful mode). There is a performance mode which runs at 720P60, but it looks a bit janky.
That's not really where the meat of Disgaea is though, that's in the stories and the gameplay and thankfully, this is a pretty strong entry in the Disgaea series. The story revolves around Zed, a zombie with the power of super reincarnation who is on the hunt to destroy the God of Destruction. Along the way, Zed picks up a band of cohorts as the super reincarnation takes you to different lands. It's funny and creepy in places, with each main character having prenounced quirks.
The combat is the usual tactical Disgaea stuff the series is known for, turn-based, allowing you to plan out your moves. Bonus gains to chaining attacks between characters (so it pays to plan out a series of hits), which can be standard weapon based or from the extensive list of specials.
Item world returns, but the GeoBlocks have been simplified, so there's no longer the big chains of status chances there once was (not as much of a fan). Evalities return (and there are a lot of them) which can really add powerful attributes and skills to a character.
There's the Dark Assembley which allows different bills to be passed to open up new character classes and events. The juicebar is a new thing that allows stored up experience to add levels, weapon efficiency and classes efficiency to be quickly expanded (for a price).
And new to Disgaea is auto combat which lets the game play itself to help with grinding (and this time the max level is 99,999,999) - I'm in two minds on this one, as half the fun of Disgaea is the grind. I'm not convinced upping the level limit so high really adds that much.
Overall, it's a good entry into the series (not quite up to Disgaea 5) and has some slightly simplified mechanics in places, but without destroying the overall feel of the game. Definitely recommended and it'll soon be out on PC and PS4/5. (I'd be tempted to say wait for those releases, but it's not awful on Switch if you have a pro style controller).
