    The Callisto Protocol

I didn't know anything about this until last week. The forgettable title went under my radar until I read about the Dead Space connection. Fair to say it has had a mixed reaction.

So it's not Dead Space. The combat may have some connections (the stomp) but it's not as shooting focussed ... instead you do a lot of battling toe to toe. Bobbing and weaving like Super Punch Out. Hold one way for one attack, the other way for the next (never twice in the same direction). It's pretty straight forward to manage this one-to-one but crown control is tougher. Conditions can be cramped, there is no quick 180 turn for your character and you are often attacked by another monster while dealing with one. Successful encounters might need a little luck along with your skillz but there are upgrades along the way that add to your arsenal/tactical approach a bit. Welcome additions as things feel a bit basic initially.

On top of the sometimes demanding combat the game can be unfair to you too. For instance, if you open a chest or locker or cabinet and don't need the item or don't have space for it, you can't go back and get it when you do ... it'll have disappeared. This is disappointing in a survival horror game where every resource counts (especially when you got the game from CeX and missed out on the day 1 dlc).

So it can be a little punishing, but after a couple of hours there hasn't been anything approaching rage-inducing. Quite the opposite. This is one of those games that keeps you wanting to move forward. Just get to the next area. Then the next. But don't to forget to explore alternate paths into storage and laundry areas as they might have precious supplies.

The atmosphere is great too. The space prison feels well lived in and dank, and with headphones on the sound really adds to things too with creatures shuffling around in the ducts and stuff. Oh, and there's the gore. It's proper OTT gore. Heads torn apart. Faces literally punched in. It's graphic stuff. Doesn't hold back. I like that.

It hasn't quite got the feels of a AAA release ... more like a cult classic in the making. With a bit of spit & polish and fine tuning it might achieve a broader appeal but really, it's one that you have to approach on its own terms. It might have me fuming by this time tomorrow, stuck on an impossible boss or scenario or something. But right now I'm fully on board and enjoying myself.

I'm around 8 hours into this now according to the pause screen ... a period of time which hasn't taken into account a couple of encounters that took more than a few attempts to conquer. There are challenging moments but, so far, nothing that hasn't kept me coming back.

I've gone from having an inventory that's too small, meaning I have to leave good stuff un-picked-up ... to a bigger inventory that never feels like it has enough in it It's deffo survival horror territory but never at the level of old school Resident Evil. You can use your guns and stuff ... but it's better if you can use other solutions, especially with the GRP glove + spikey things (suck them in and launch them into the pain). On the subject of the GRP, in many occasions you can launch enemies off the edge or down to a lower level, but by not killing them you have no corpse to plunder for precious ammo/health/credits.

The atmosphere once the game gets going is consistently great. I'd have gone nuts for this back in the 90s when I was mad for Alien and Aliens. The influence is huge. A couple of days ago I got a trophy called 'in the pipe, five by five'.

Surprisingly enjoyable game so far. Once the combat clicks you have a number of methods in which to handle situations. But the game feels like it's designed to make you panic and never feel safe ... and getting through a dangerous area can feel great ... until you stumble right into the next, haha

Finished this last night on normal difficulty. Enjoyed it for most part. Tense space horror, visceral combat and satisfying resource management combined with a few challenging moments but nothing off-putting.

I’d say the only real negative is it’s over a little bit too soon … but then it never outstays its ‘welcome’ either.

Probably not destined for classic status but I enjoyed it and I’m glad I didn’t dismiss it based on what the internet was saying.

Finally started this over the weekend and I'm late now in Chapter 3 of 8. It's visually very nice and I already feel like it pitching itself as a Dead Space inspired title was a mistake. It clearly is but the execution is so different. The focus on physical fighting robs any sense of dread as you go toe to toe with the monsters and they run at you like you're playing a walk a long beat em up. The game rattles along, constantly pushing you forward with little down time. But, taking it for what it is rather than what it isn't, I'm enjoying it so far. It's like a fun and polished AA game.

          Finished this.

Easiest way to summarise it is that as long as you take it as a AA release there's very little to grumble about it. The game ends in a fine enough way and I did pick up the Final Transmission DLC for the 'true ending' but to be honest whilst it's fine it doesn't add much and isn't quite as polished as the main campaign so take it or leave it on that one. The game itself though was solid enough.

Nice to see some constructive comments on this. Its on my radar but I`m not looking to drop £60 on it based on the playtimes.

Yep, definitely not a full price job. They've unsurprisingly sold out but Smyths have been selling it for £10 so at that price it's a low risk

Yep, no idea why it's much slower to drop on PC. Cheapest I've seen it on that was on G2A for around £20

I looked on G2A and they dont seem to have many good value keys, all the lower priced ones are accounts.
