Have you had a look at GameFAQS for some pointers? I would guess they have some good guides. It's a fairly simple premise, but one you're unlikely to 'get' unless you read how to play it in a mag, or heard people speak about it on a forum.
Basically, you begin a level as one of the kids (I won't go into the storyline here), and must retreive enough blue orbs in the level to destroy the guardian (a floating platform with a ball on top and tentacles underneath) and move on to the boss.
As the kid, you must walk to the point where NiGHTS is caged and jump in. You then become NiGHTS, and must fly around the level, collecting the orbs and depositing them in the guardian. The levels are designed so that this must be done in a tight time limit, although the limit is extended when you deposit any orbs. Some are well hidden, and it often takes a few circuits around the level to get them all.
Paralooping (creating a loop in the air with your trail) creates a vortex wherein all items such as chips and rings are sucked towards you, saving time.
It's a simple game, really: speed around the level and collect the chips, then deposit them into the Ideya (the tentacle thing) and move onto the boss. The joy comes in the freedom of arial movement available (many tricks can be performed, and it really feels like you are 'flying' the character) and creating massive chains for great scores and rankings.
There is no 'pushing' in the game: it has a measured game, is short but non-linear and has oddles of replay potential. Getting good at speeding though a level with real grace and creating massive chains is all part of the fun. I could go on (NiGHTS is my favourite game of all time, and I am often found rambling on about it on here ^^), but suffice it to say, it's original, fun, unique and beautifully crafted. Imo, it has that elusive, pure joy that all the best games have.
