    oooOOo Co-operation's what you need

    Its not dedication, its cooperation.

See now in my many years, I have and always will love the cooperative mode on games. This stems primaily from my youth where if me and brothers were to play a competitively it would usually end up with a broken limb, so for the sake of world peace, we had to find a third way. This was the co-operative game.

I will buy any game that has a cooperative mode, sure the days of me and my bros duking with the parents spliting us up are long gone, but still now the co-op has that aura.

Probably the first co-op game or atleast non competitive game I can recall is bubble bobble, then the likes of Contra, and moving onto other games. Even doing a two player football game cooperatively is great, the communication the team work.

I was wondering what your first experiences of co-opage were, and what games you play today co-operatively, what gems are there that aren't FPS games, like FF:CC and 4 Swords...?

Ah yes, Co-op mode, indeed the best thing since sliced bread.

It works on every level, making a good game even better and making a crap game good. You really feel like your having fun with co-op and I much prefer it to multi.

And my first co-op expecince? Golden Axe all the way dude

      Broken limbs ensue once again.

I remembr the first type of co- op games where on the C64. Me an me bro would play spy hunter where he would drive and i would initiate the oil licks on the enemy! Also Ikari Warriors was gr8 for co-oping!

As time went on we turned to new games like streets of rage, Turtles in time. Then mario Kart came about and tackling 150cc was a nightmare. What we used to do was help each other out by aiding one player to win all the ime whilst the other would pick up the goodies to destroy the cpu. It was one of the firstinstance where we would go against the grain and introduce a co-op where there was no such part of the game.

With FPS, me an me bro get motion sickness ( cant cure it ) so the like of unreal and halo are a no no........ shame i know. Although goldeneye seemed fine.Gues it must be the rich colours on screen or somat.

Thinking back now about games back then, the way they are ported to meet the needs of current gen gamers and marketing stategies; has resulted in the essence being lost from the original. For example Gauntlet was great back in the arcade and c64. The latest iteration (gauntlet legends i think) was an absolute attrocity!

I do agree that co-op is a saving grace. One that i often dreamt about since i was small and the technology back then being limting ?_?.

Its suprising how this is not overly utilised in modern games and it bring to life a new way of looking at a game after the 1 player mode of a game is done and dusted.

My first was Snake rattle 'n' roll on the NES which had quite a decent co-op mode for the time. It was in your interest for your partner to do well because when the weigh-in happened at the end of the level if your partner had been hit then neither of you could finish the level.

Recently I've been pretty much limited to Timesplitters which was actually really good fun especially the zombie beheading levels on the higher difficulty settings. I played Cookies and Cream (called something else here) which was offers a decent puzzle coop experience.

I always wondered if Starsky and Hutch coop was any good - the idea of one driving and the other shooting seems quite appealing.

Wow, I first played dramatic battle on Street Fighter Alpha on PS1 with a friend of mine. It was so good even when we absolutely pounded Bison into the ground we'd start a new game and do it all over again.

Indeed m8! a simple option like this in the game contributed a lot to the overall game package!

Out of curiosity, was bonanza bros any good as a co-op game?

No not really, the game doesn't have a very good balance to it so it takes an age to destroy a car. Limited, though it does have a few charms for a while in coop.

Co-op games will always be a preference of mine, which is why games like Doom3 and Halo2 are so exciting. I was gutted that they took out sys-link in Full Spectrum Warrior as I'm unable to get on Live (no bb).
Currently Four Swords + is my fave, however my friends are not so keen on it (probably due to the language). Other games, like Champions of Norrath, are very enjoyable also, though having played through most of the games in the genre (including Gauntlet Legends and D&D Heros), they are becoming slightly tiring. I'd love to see a Star Wars game using the Norrath 2 engine. Mmmmm.

I personally find co-op gaming to be far more satisfying than going it alone or even deathmatch. Probably why I loved TFC so much more than Quake, and why I love CTF Halo far more than Slayer. That said, the charms of Hang Um High on Rocket Arena is always fun...

Of the non-obvious coop games incoming, I'd say that Burnout3 is the one I'm most interested in. Co-op crash junctions...could be so good.

I think my first experiance of co-op was with that old MegaDrive game, think it was called Alien Storm? With that bloke, lady and that robot who can self destruct. There were sections of the game where you ran through levels, had light gun type levels and the standard Golden Axe type gameplay. Was a load of fun, I remember we hooked up a Master System joypad so we could play 2 player (only had 1 MD joypad)

The main advantage of co-op is that no matter how good you are, you can both have fun. There is little enjoyment to be had when you're getting your face kicked in by someone, but when both of you are doing the kicking, everybody's happy.

Halo on co-op is quite rightly the best thing evar. Hopefully, Halo 2 will allow co-op over Live and link up.

I played Conflict Desert Storm 2 over co-op and it was a right old laugh. Haven't played it single player, so I can't compare, but I was pleasantly surprised.

I used to really enjoy playing shmups 2 player, but with the more recent predaliction for chaining/levelling up and what not, 2 player shmups have become a bit of a joke. Dodonpachi co-op is the second best thing evar.

The guy that came up with sliced bread couldn?t sell the stuff. No one would buy it because it went stale in just a few hours.
It wasn?t until the invention of Wax Paper that sliced bread started selling. This is because they had something to wrap it in to stop it from going stale so quick. So I guess its better to say the best thing since Wax Paper.

Not that this has anything to do with this topic but I think it?s a nice story. One that I got off How To.
