    Outrun 2 extras?

With all talk of the extra modes and missions etc that Sumo Digital plan to incorporate into the home version of Outrun 2 for the XBox its got me thinking wether or not this is what people really want?

After a long discussion / friendly argument with AllYourBase on MSN the other day it seems that my thoughts on the matter are probably at odds with the majority of people.

I personally wish that Sumo would leave the game alone and deliver essentially nothing more than an arcade perfect copy of the game with XBox Live support to simulate 4 player linked up racing. I don't want to see extra missions or other "enhancements" to the arcade original. I want them to keep it pure with only Outrun Mode, Heart Attack Mode and Time Trials. These surely should provide enough depth for everyone. Outrun 2 is all about taking the perfect line and having perfect control over your drift. But it seems like this won't be enough for Joe Public...they seem to need missions and probably some kind of story mode to retain their interest for more than a couple of hours.

What do you think? Am i right in wanting a pure Outrun 2 experience or do you feel that the more modes and other "enhancements" the better?

Well as long as all the Arcade modes are there then I would be happy, an endurance mode of all the courses one after the other would be good
too as would a few more Ferrari cars, especially from the 60s and 70s.

Any extras they put it would be a nice addition. ^_^

Knew Sega still loved the Xbox, can't wait for a Japanese release.

You've got a point, and I can see where you're coming from. But then I only have to consider if the Dreamcast version of Soul Calibur would have been a better conversion if it had been true to its arcade parent... And I don't think it would.

In some cases, adding more can definately help a game. It's all about balance and selection as to whether that works or not.

Let's hope Sumo can follow Namco's lead in this area.

Worst case scenario is that all the extras are total tosh. As long as the arcade mode gets it right everything else is just a bonus.

Unless it has a chase HQ style pursuit mode and 100 different unlockable cars I won't be happy!

The thing that ensures you don't clock a game straight away in an arcade is the credit commitment; that's removed from home, so anyone can (and will) see everything the game has to offer in next to no time at all so something else is required to keep players coming back (regardless of score, time trails).

I'll be happy if it just plays well, mind.

Well they could do with lowering the timelimit quite alot. As Commander Marklar says it's a doddle to complete it on the hardest route with little practice. But then perfecting heart attack is something that keeps you coming back.

Good games for me are the ones you can pop on for half an hour and not worry about unlocking **** or progressing from where you were already. You just play because you enjoy the experience. The Outrun 2 extras don't bother me as such but I doubt I'll play anything but pure arcade mode.

I don't care about extras in Outrun 2 as long as the Arcade modes are replicated perfectly.

Wether or not the original arcade mode is easy to complete is irrelevent as it's all about getting solid times & scores on TT mode and heart attack mode respectively. If the home version turns out to be half as addictive as Initial D then I'll put more time into playing my brick than I have since first buying the thing.

Customiseable options are about the only extras I'm hoping for.

You should be able to choose the amount of credits you want to be able to play the game with (from none up to a reasonable number for Joe Average - 9 perhaps?). This way you can play the game you want, no matter what sort of gamer you are.

What they did with the Saturn port of the original Outrun was only give players one credit, and once your time ran out it was game over. I think this would be ideal for prolonging the game's life - I know I haven't completed the game yet, although I haven't played it lots to be honest. Alternatively there was a cheat that allowed you to simulate the the coin-op and have credits.

The arcade has enough modes for me, but if the developers can do something to the quality of the mission mode that Soul Calibur had, then I'm all up for some extras.

Just to echo the comments from others as long as the full arcade experience is in there I'm buying this game.

However lets not forget how wonderful the DC version of Crazy Taxi is. A near perfect arcade port with some superb extras in the crazy box mode and an entire new city to explore.

There is so much potential for cool extras in Outrun2. I hope they don't pass up the opportunity to deliver.

You cannot "Continue" in Outrun 2.

Oh! Here is an idea if Sumo are reading this (which they'd be fools not to) - How about a push button code on the title screen that literally turns it into "Arcade Mode" - a near-as-dammit copy of the arcade game with identical menus, options (hell, even the operator menu) etc to please the people that want it? Cut Live support out of this mode and obviously make the bare required changes to meet the Xbox TCRs, but a mode/cheat like this would sell so many more copies to people that really care.

They say the first thing they did was do a straight port of the arcade version, so it can't be hard.

have the original arcade midi music (not the remakes for outrun 2) as unlockable and a sprite mode with the new courses or something...

I put money on there being Outrun 1 as an unlockable. Seems just natural, right?
