    id Anthology

Reading the earlier post about the Activision Anthology, I decided to dust off my id Anthology collection which I purchased years ago. Unbelievable that the CGA graphics horror of "Dangerous Dave" was produced by John Carmack. The programmer of Quake3 and the new Doom had only just got the hang of doing sideways character scrolling, and the rudimentary 3d of Wolfenstein was but a glimmer in the distant future. Nice set to own though, containing all of the id software games right up to Quake1.

Am I right in saying that Carmack was one of the first programmers to get smooth scrolling out of the lowly 286 processor?

Hmm, I'll actually admit to not knowing anything pre-Wolfenstein from iD. I don't think this would be the game you're thinking of though Brats, because if memory (heh) serves, it ran in protected mode, which the 286 can't do.

Dangerous Dave doesn't appear to be using a DOS extender of any sort, so I don't think it's running protected. The scrolling ain't that smooth either (well, at least not in vertical). The horizontal ain't bad though. LOL. The game is pretty dire by today's standards. It's amusing and impressive how far Carmack has come.

Smooth scrolling isn't that difficult on a lowerly PC, although decent guides weren't around unless you wanted to pay big bucks. Horizontal and Vertical scrolling are possible, but require some horrid code, possible to get ultra smooth scrolling from QBASIC on a 8086 with a EGA or VGA card.
