As far as I know, the 24hr thing is bull****. If you own the game, then you can legally download the ROM. If not, it's illegal. Don't try to hide that.

still dispute that to be honest

only 1 person owns the game and thats who has copyrighted it

so its normally the company unless they have released it as freeware

and if you own the game why would you want to download the rom???

makes me laugh when people post that they are allowed it for 24hrs

who here downloads romz and then deletes them after 24hrs..... noone, once its downloaded its kept

i have loads of neo games so apparently i'm allowed to download the romz of the stuff i own - dont think so

romzz are great for archiving older games and i love to play some older stuff on mame all the time to be honest, a quick game of shinobi, double dragon, rygar or splatterhouse is sometimes better than playing modern stuff

There's nothing wrong with downloading roms, especially when you can't actually buy the game new anymore. So you're not exactly hurting the company are you?

Oh ****, here we go again.

              ROMZ are legally wrong.

Morally, it depends on how you feel. End of story.

about the 24hr thing i only mentioned it because i see it every time i read the agreement that is on most rom sites to absolve them of blame and at one stage me and my friend had nearly fifty neo geo roms and played our way through the entire meteal slug series

You and your mate sound like a right crazy mad bunch!

Interestingly, last week's episode of the amazing Channel 4 series You Are What You Eat featured one of the family's kids playing a game on their PC. Except, it was a snes rom. A Dragonball Z one. I can't remember the exact name anymore tho, but I recognised it. I wonder if the production company knew that they were going to be okaying footage of some kid breaking the law for the final broadcast edit.

I was playing Zombies today with a snes pad using a super joy box from Lik-sang. Which is weird because I actually do own Zombies for the snes but my snes in on the blink. Does that make it ok? Having said that I have played tons of games which I don't own as roms so I gues its just swings and roundabouts or whatever that saying is (have I even used that saying right?)

                        agreed

but i do get annoyed when games like samurai spirits zero special get dumped and people (gamefaqs mainly) are begging for it

                        otherwise roms are pretty good

No SNES roms on my PC, because it's crap playing retro games, let alone with a keyboard!!

before i got thrashed for not liking retro gaming, i dont care, it's just my point of view

Downloading, dumping, owning, selling infact anything to do with roms is under UK law, illegal. Simple as that. Why? Because you are in breach of the license you purchased when you bought the game which is transferred when you pass it on. Secondly it is in breach of copyright. You have no right to make back ups what so ever as that is again in breach of the license you purchased. For the record, when you buy software, you purchase a license to use the code stored on (and not limited to) cart, cd, floppy, flash card, bios, firm ware etc etc etc. You own nothing bar the disk or plastic case housing rom chips and something giving you permission to use this.

There is just one thing I am curious about regarding ROMS, is it illegal to own ROMS that have never been released in this country? Surely because the game will not be copyrighted here, there would be no laws against owning copies.
