    Geekwiglasses...i completely agree.

Older and 4:3 Sony's are great. I've even got a 29" 4:3 Triniton from a couple of years ago and that got a great picture. I'd always pay the premium and go for a Sony if i was after a telly like this

Its such a shame that in my experience nearly all their widescreen models are very much below par. I don't think its anything to do with the technology either...more a complete lack of quality control.

Speaking from my own experience i will never buy a Sony branded AV product again, i've had two tv's both 4:3 one a 25 inch one a 29 inch a video and a AV amp(STRDB 925) and they were all plagued with problems. If i ever bought a crt tv again it would be a Toshiba, the last one i owned was a 36 ZP18 picture frame and it was fantastic however my Hitachi plasma hammers it in the picture department.
I agree about the older Sony sets being very good and reliable as my parents had one for years but they seem to have lost the plot recently in the tv department.
As for gaming on a plasma i cannot see how anyone wouldn't want to do it, obviously not everyone can afford one but if you can don't hesitate.

Well, never, bar PlayStations (natch) had a Sony product that didn't break. I take good care of my stuff and use the best in audio/visual cabling possible. My Walkman fell to bits, my Sony earphones (which has been covered elsewhere I believe) died after a few months, my TVs, well, nuff said, and my stereo was **** from the get go. The irony is I took that stereo back and got a frickin' Aiwa as a replacement - and that's STILL going 10 years later!

i also have a mate who had a dixon special(sony 28" widescreen with dvd player and stand) for 599 quid last year, the rgb picture is simply stunning.

sony products generally sell for more money than its competitors mainly because of the reputation for quality it has built up over years of making products.

i'll agree that their plasma and lcd screens are under par, but thats only because they(apparently) are stuck with samsung making their screens.

panasonic would be an easy second place in the crt wars

toshiba are good but only a component connectivity makes its 32" and 36"
            sets seem better.

            well that my opinion anyway

I'm happy with my 5" LCD PSOne still, nearly 12 months on.

Easily tate'able for Raiden which is nice. It's like reading a book in bed.

I play on my year-old 21" Sony WEGA. Fantastic picture through RGB, yet to be rivalled, and it's fine for my small bedroom.

Saving for my projector though :P

I've got got two 28" Sony TVs, had them 5-6 years and still going fine.

In fact i only got the second one because of an insurance claim. About 5 years ago the neighbours bathroom flooded, dumped a ****load of water right onto the TV/PS1/video. Munted them all, but i had to go away for 3 weeks, and told the girlfriend dont do anything i'll look at them when they come back. She apparently got bored with no TV after a couple of days, switched it on and it had dried out enough to be working again. The insurance quote was already in, and the engineer said it might be water-damaged and should be replaced anyway - that was 5 years ago! From my experiance they are total quality.

But big screen gaming is great, for some games. The only real problem is having to have the curtains closed on hot days for the PJ to run properly, and of course some games just dont suit big-screen gaming.

                          Also,
Ion - avoid Currys and Dixons - try John Lewis.

Yeah, but it looks the bollocks. Plus the Yamaha badge is more shiny.

yeah - I bought a 32" panny from JL a few years ago because they give you 5 years insurance free. The telly packed up after about a year, so they gave me a credit note and I replaced it with a nice Loewe Aventos.

I hate currys, that why i went to Tempo originally, unfortunatly whatever deal you can find anywhere doesnt compare to ?2k of free vouchers.
