Went to the London today with Razu for a day in the arcades. Of course The Trocadero is the only choice, but we also went to a small place on Tottenham Court next to Goodge Street Station which was ace. The latter place has only 2D games downstairs, which was fantastic to see, and also has some newer games upstairs like Initial D and House of the Dead III.
Today, we played the following games:
Goodge St Arcade:
Demolish Fist:
We saw this the last time we went down, but never got chance to play it, so this time we pumped some cash into it. Great game, plays and feels like a new Final Fight or Streets of Rage would. You get some cool power-moves which require mad button bashing which results in lots of ass kicking. Lots of fun - would be cool if it got a home port. I am sure people have talked about it here before.
Hyper Street Fighter II and SUPER Street Fighter II Turbo:
Don't need to say much about these really as everyone knows they are the bestest arcade games ever.
The Trocadero:
Outrun 2:
I can't personally praise this game much more than I already have on here and other forums. This now is my most favourite arcade racing game of all time. Daytona USA was No.1 for years, and even until recently after a good few sessions on Outrun 2, Daytona USA was the daddy, but now Outrun 2 is No.1. Its so beautiful to play and feels so right. I can't fault the game in any way, and its exactly what I wanted it to be. I love it to bits and played it for hours today and completed it on most difficultys including the hardest setting, and also nailed Heart Attack on Hard too. Its definetly much, much easier than the original Outrun! The Xbox version cannot come soon enough.
Daytona USA:
Eight player linkup machine, fantastic. Still plays so well and is mucho fun. 4th into 1st into 3rd then 4th goes the gears to get the Hornet sliding is still ace. Starting to look its age now, and you can see how they evolved the handling over the years too. Still love it.
Namco Maximum Tune:
I think thats the name. I liked this, thought the handling was good and the city stage was cool too. However, I didnt dig having to pay per race though through story mode. Bit cheaky, that. But Namco, there is only one arcade racing game you should be making..
Guilty Gear XX:
I love these link 2D fighter cabs they have these days - cool idea. I was playing said game and doing ok, then I got a few challenges from people behind my cab. Quality. Love this game too, definate for a possible PlayStation2 purchase.
Daytona USA 2:
Its been a long time since I got to play this game, espicially in the deluxe hydrualic cab version they have in the Trocadero. Fantastic, fantastic game with lovely handling, and great tracks and cars. You can totally see how Sega were evolving the powerslide with Daytona 2. No need for 1st gear action in the corners, this is a 4th > 3rd deal like Outrun 2 (6th > 5th etc). And the tracks are unlockable in Outrun 2 XB? Sweeeeet..
Sega Rally 2:
Still a classic, this one. Handling is spot on, and the style and soul to the whole game is a legend. Hopefully we'll see an update one day, but for now this will do. Oh yes.
Think thats everything we played today
Great day out, and we got to play come classic stuff. Outrun 2 really was the game of the day for me, with Daytona 2 coming in second.
