What the Hell is that Noise?

I keep hearing a bizzare animal noise whilst playing certain japanese games

I first heard it in Harvest Moon on the GBA during the summer months, and I soon got pikmin 2 and started to hear it on the marshy level, Now just minutes after booting up magic pengel I hear yet the same thing, the same

    "Eghh eghh egh eghhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh"

Its freakin me out, and I really gotta find out what it is!
I'm guessing its some sort of japanese indiginous bird or frog or pig or something!

Its really freaky, I hate it!

It's not that crickety type sound you hear in animes sometimes, it is?

I wouldn't describe it as crickity, When I first heard it I thought it was a baby being murdered

Is it the cicada, there's one you can catch in animal crossing, it makes the same noise as in hot day scenic moments in Evangelion.

Very much like the noise you descirbe EB.

I'm not sure, I found some sounds of cicada's but couldn't find one that sounded like it

I'd boot up AC and check the town museum for it's name, but, you know, that means getting up and stuff.

And i'd get a bollocking off the Rosie for not getting her Gameboy back *shudders*

Shend.. that's exactly what I was thinking, bits from NGE. Was trying to find a quick clip to extract, but not having much luck.

slightly OT, but when i was in japan a few years ago i was amazed at the pervasiveness and volume of this particular sound in real life. i don't know anything about the creatures themselves, or whether they only come out in the summer months, but sweet lord they seemed to be everywhere...

it's funny, cos i never noticed or payed attention to it in anime/games before then, but after i got back i began to notice it in bloody loads of them...

                    but anyway, i digress.

I'm making that sound RIGHT NOW.

Erp: Two things. 1: Class avatar, where's my C64 gone?, 2. Did you see the sound making creatures dying or dead all over pavements everywhere? I saw an obscene amount on their backs cooking in the sun :\

really? bloody hell. no, i can't say i saw any of that. infact i have no real memory of seeing the things at all - i could just _hear_ them. everywhere. i think i might have consciously been trying not to actually see them though, because quite frankly they freaked me out...
