But I really do have trouble understanding the thinking behind comments such as the one above. Yes it doesn?t do anything massively different from the original game, but the original was an incredible gaming experience, and SC2 DOES improve upon it in so many subtle respects which makes it a better game.

I admit that I have never played VF4Evo. Is it really so revolutionary? What is ?new? about it over VF4 that makes it so good?
Well everyone is entitled to their opinion are they not? I have never played V4Evo so I've not said anything about it being revolutionary, good or new. Surely you can see they did very little to SC2 over its prequel.
Sure, everyone is entitled to an opinion, but please elaborate on it.

They did very little over the original Soul Calibur? I disagree with that to some extent. Played as Mitsurugi in both versions? He feels quite different to me. A number of new attacks have been added, a couple of his important attacks have had their command changed or moved function. He also seems slightly slower than his SC1 incarnation, although this may be because the other characters have been sped up, whereas he hasn't received the same benefits. I've not gone in depth with all of the other old characters yet (been putting some heavy sessions in with Talim and Yunsung (underrated but still not as good as Hwang)).

I've used this equation before but:

Great game (Soul Calibur) + Improvements (no matter how 'small') = Better Game.

I've not said it isn't a great game but when playing it doesn't feel like a true sequel it just feels like an enhanced version of the first. I think Soul Calibur 2 is an excellent game but I'm still dissapointed - I don't have anywhere near the same enthusiasm for it as I did with the first because it feels like the same thing all over again.

If someone said to me should I buy SC on the DC for ?10 or SC2 for ?49 I'd say get the first as there isn't enough on offer to make the sequel that much better.

I guess it was hard for them to improve on something that was so good but I can't think of any stand-out features that make me sing the praises of the game having played the first one - its a great game but doesn't offer a great deal over one that came out over three years ago.

are you talking from a retro spective view there m8? i mean is it because you dont get that initial magic joy-joy feeling you did with the original make you dissapointed with the sequel? i mean you should hve seen this coming. You can never expect somthing drastically different with a sequel. So maybe your being a bit harsh there. of course i aint played the sequel an i dont intend to till it coes down in price.

Given that its been coming up for 4 years since SC and they are working with allegedly more powerful consoles I just feel they could have added more to it - everything just feels and looks the same.

I really don't see why SC2 could be branded as being disappointing. If Namco were to change the game too much then it wouldn't be Soul Calibur anymore. In reality SC is an evolution from Soul Edge.

I never understand why at times people aren't happy with sequels unless it is completely different from the original. Surely that misses the point, and what made the original good is lost in the transition.

Agreed. The ability and advances of attacking while moving definitely becomes more apparent with Mitsurugi imo. I was actually quite shocked to how restricted he felt in the original SC…

SC2 was not as revolutionary as Soul Calibur, but I don’t think that was ever expected. But the changes are there and the game benefits from then considerably. I shouldn’t say too much more, as I shall only be repeating what I have said in the past…

There are some disappointments though that may affect the overall length for some. Mostly the extras. I am quite aware some people couldn’t care less about how many items or unlockables there are, but for others still they do care and can be quite significant.

The original SC had an immense amount of unlockables, mainly being Artwork from the weapon quest mode. This in its self was very enjoyable and took some time to beat and master. Luckily the weapon mission in SC2 is just as good if not better imo, with added story and dungeons (admittedly I can’t actually understand the story yet. But it is there) But the unlockables aren’t quite as nice… The exhibitions and extras modes (time attack, extra time attack atc) are all great fun but the other unlockables such as Artwork are missed. Also it seems that the character exhibitions are almost identical to those from SC, which in its self is a great shame and slightly disappointing. Also I found actually ‘earning’ the hidden characters was far to easy and happened to quickly, only taking about 20mins max…

But to others, such as myself, I am sure that mastering all the new moves will last more then months to come. There is a hell of a lot to do in SC2 and almost every moment of it is pure excellence and fun. It is a great shame that some of the characters didn’t make it to this version… but then again, that may change with the US version…

Overall though, i understand completely how people have their own opinions and i respect that, but it just seems a little strange that fans of the first dont seem to like sc2 as much... Surely the little but present changes should make orignal SC fans happy or sad?

              Kind regards
              Adam

The words in my first post were 'slightly dissapointed' - I had high hopes for it thats all, there just seems to be that little something extra to set it apart IMO.

I've just got too much into VF now to appreciate SC(I haven't bought the sequel yet). I'm not that good at VF but when everything clicks and I get the timing just right there's a moment of pure exileration that SC never gave me.

So is the summary, for Sidez's benefit, that the game is only a significant improvement over the original when using certain characters? Because early posts suggested that he may not get the most out of the game using the characters he preferred.

I'd say, from playing for a couple of hours, if you want a tweaked, enhanced, prettier version of SC then the sequel is spot on.

If you wanted innovations, changes and new features, then you may be disappointed, but its still a great game.

Which I think is in agreement with most of whats above.

Whether a certain character is 'better' or not is purely down to personal peference though, surely?

In that case, Sidez has answered his own question, really. It doesn't provide the things he wants with his favourite characters, and therefore is redundant in terms of his needs.

That's exactly it for me too

They have taken everything I love about Soul Calibur away instead of building on everything that is already there (Like Evo does ^^)

I just think that a few months ago when Soul Calibur 2 can out they were loads of posts about how great it was, then all of a sudden this website started loving VF Evo giving it 10/10 and now it seems uncool to like SC because some of the regular people are praising VF Evo so much. Which if it is anything like VF4 i would say the game is just so hard and takes months to get any good at it that by the time you do you are so bored of the game that you move on to something else.

I think peoples' depth of understanding of SC2 should tell you this is not the result of some passing forum fad or fancy, Tom, and is the result of people playing the game and getting to know it.

Hang on Tom man - I didnt start playing SC2 when the home version came out. I had been playing it in the arcades for like 5 months or so.

Also man - speak for yourself on VF4. I've been playing Soul Calibur for almost 5 years now and love it MORE, the more time I put into it. Same with Evo, maybe if you take some time to learn these games properly you'll see what all the fuss is about.
