I blame it on the stupid oversized boxes games and DVDs come in. It's a CD FFS, why not put it in a jewel case? Would take up less shelf space that way too.
Now that's what I'm talking about. I like DVD cases as they're fairly sturdy and don't crack like jewel cases, but they take up far too much room and the plastic covers 'scuff' too easily. I suppose it's all down to public perception - people want to feel like they're getting something 'better' than before, so different packaging is used. All you're getting is more air inside the case and a bigger manual.
Oh, for the days of the (imported) Saturn and Dreamcast...
