      Ultimate Solution to the Problem:

Why dont they just do like they did for some 1980's VHS covers, and have them double sided?

One side, could be the main marketed cover, any old rubbish the PR men wanted, the flip side underneath could be the original artwork.
The extra ink needed wouldnt cost so much.

That way, it could be sold with whatever cover they wanted, and when those who appreciate good art buy it, they can simply flip the covers.

A film starring James Woods did this. It was called "Cop" I believe.
Ive got it, crappy film, but great cover idea. One side was a painted mural for the film, really crappy, the other side a stark photograph of him smoking a cigarette, with a mini photo of him, half blended into the face holding a shotgun.
      (any got these photos?)
The photo was cool and very avante guarde.
I flipped it to suit my tatses. Video stores did the same.

Why dont game companies do this?
It would be cheap, easy, and that way stores themselves could choose which cover to have displayed.
Indies would maybe go for the original art, whilst big brand stores go for the newer marketing cover.

Hey, just an idea. But I quite like it.
I thought to myself, this is so brilliant, why hasnt anyone else done it?

I thought Sega of America's Skies of Arcadia Legends cover was pretty bad... real cut-and-paste clipart stuff. The main offender for me is the badly thrown together back and text on the spine.

I made my own version which I prefer, but that could just be because it's my own job...

And I totally agree with otaku about the flippable covers, I think that'd be a great idea.

              Heh

Damn that brings back memories. I don't recall ever seeing a good piece of cover art in the 8-bit era.

Yeah, the US Skies cover is suprisingly bad. The Overworks logo on your version was a nice touch

Jpn Gun Grave had a really nice flippable cover.

Let me provide a few examples of what I consider "good" then

That reverse cover for Gungrave was the most insane thing I've ever seen.

I don't think I have ever laughed so much whilst reading a topic on a games forum in my life.

By the way, what the hell is that popping out from his trouser waistband
