The German ratings board recently decided that their logo should be much bigger than it used to be. And there's a good chance they could soon be joining the Aussies in blocking the release of any title that gets higher than a 15...

LOL, That Phalanx cover is great. I'd love to know how they managed to connect "the hyper-speed shoot out in space" with "old guy with a banjo..."

Even though I put it in this thread I do really like the Phalanx cover but just couldn't understand why the hell they went with the Phalanxing Banjos theme.

I've read about it a few places as people always seem to wonder why it happened and about the only info I could find on it was on Wiki.

Phalanx is a space shooter video game designed by ZOOM Inc. for the Sharp X68000, and Kemco for the Super Nintendo and Game Boy Advance. Phalanx is infamous for the incongruous box art in its American release: it displays a bearded elderly man dressed in overalls, wearing a fedora and playing a banjo while a futuristic spaceship flies in the background. The popular media site IGN named it their 5th "Most Awesome Cover" in a recent Top 25 Countdown on their website.


The box art designers later admitted that they had deliberately chosen this theme in order to attract the customer with something original considering there were many space shooters in the market that looked alike. The Game Boy Advance release redesigned the cover in favor of a prominent spaceship image.

There's no citation with that claim but it's got to be one of the most talked about covers on a game.

I know which one I prefer out of these three!






If they chose it to get attention then it seems to have done the job and it's just a bit special when it comes to game covers.

Surely, if any retro game cover was ever deserving it's own t-shirt then the SNES Phalanx cover is perfect for it?
