When a game keeps you up all night

After doing a spot of kinstone trading in Minish Cap last night I ended up playing on and didn't stop for a number of hours. I got completly sucked in by the whole experience and just kept on playing into the wee hours when my eyes and thumbs eventually gave in. I got a bit of sleep then woke up and played even more this morning. This is unusual for me and especially unusual with a handheld title as I don't usually play these in the house. It just goes to show how good Minish Cap is.

I've been having a think about this and the last time I played a game all night then woke up and played some more (not counting the NTSC-uk meet or any multiplayer game for that matter)was actually 6 years ago with Ocarina of Time.

Has anyone else had a similar experince lately or is that kind of thing a common occurence for most of you? It's a once in a blue moon type of thing for me and it actually took me buy surprise. Hence this post.

Its a very rare occasion that I have the patience and stamina to have an all nighter on a game but the most recent one was Def Jam : Fight For NY. The story mode is really quite addictive and it always leads you to wonder what happens next. I was saying to myself just one more fight (you had to win fights to make money, to progress, to live) and by the time the sun rose I had completed the game.

      Bizarre.

I?ve been doing this a lot lately?

        I mean a lot?

It feels like iv been captivated by more games this year then? well, ever. This year I?ve been up until the very early hours of the evening/morning with Final Fantasy X, Fable, Twin Snakes (also when back to Shenmue 2 and Metal Gear Solid 2) Paper Mario 2, Tales of Symphonia, Ico, Zelda Minish Cap (the kinstone fusing really is addictive isnt it? ^_^ ) and more recently Halo 2, Metroid Prime 2: Echoes, Metal Gear Solid 3 and Baten.

No game has gripped me quite so insanely as Ocarina of Time though?

These are the games I love the most, they really are. Where the whole world seems to cease to exist and my reality suddenly disappears into the reality presented in front of me - completely oblivious to the fact i?m actually sitting in my room holding a controller with cold feet.

The couple of years back the Resident Evils (remake and zero) were all I could concentrate on at night. It was purely a night game imo. But oh my goodness? as soon as I hit that power button I was in that mansion or those gritty and atmospheric settings.

Also mention must go to Wind Waker (indeed sailing could become tedious? but in the early hours, it was so incredibly relaxing just to absorb the tranquility? the music, the breeze? awww?) and of course Metroid Prime

        Fantastic stuff

Half Life 2 has made me it's bitch, and forced me to play until 4 or 5 some mornings. On a school night, too.

          It's digital sex, dammit.

If we're talking strictly singleplayer, I can only think of one really - the mighty Ocarina of Time. Got it for Christmas in 1998 and stayed up till the small hours playing it every night for over a week. It encapsulated the feeling of wanting to see what what round the next corner better than any game I've ever played. Great times.

Can't really think of anything which has gripped me in the same way recently although Tales of Symphonia and GTA:SA have forced me to stay up far longer than I should have done.

If we're talking multiplayer then I've lost count of the number of times me and a mate used to play Monkey Ball or WE6:FE until the sun came up and people in the street were leaving for work...

Metroid. Prime. 2. Jesus... erm yes I know I'm doing the review, but I'm not pulling late nighters delibertately to finish the game as quickly as possible. Oh no, I'm hunting all the bloody powerups as well. And the keys. And... let's just say in the last 3 nights, the earliest I've gone to bed is 5am! Bloody game

Thankfully it IS worth it... currently my game of the year...

Final Fantasy X was the last game I spent all my nighttime hours on. It was a fantastic game, and it had so much to do. If you were bored of the plot, I'd go take a few hours playing Blitzball, or hunting down the Celestial weapons. That game totally opened up towards the end, it was fantastic. I can't think of another game I've spent so long getting the sidequests on. Even Ocarina of Time didn't have that many secrets, the Skulltulla thing I thought would give me something really badass....but as we all know it was the most pointless sidequest ever.

Yeah, I forgot about that. I speant about three sundays after I finished the main game just chasing down those buggers. What a waste of time, I could have spent those hours scoffing down more Yorkshire Pudding instead.
