My favorite is probibly 9...not just because of the great Backgrounds...but because it had LOADS of old references...the whole game was very nostalgic.

Including things like an apearence by the 4 fiends...The Mt gulug music...loads of other music references along with character names(Garland, Locke, Matoya, Hilda Etc) dungeon references (E.g pandamonium and the sealed library)

Plus some of the Best FMV's EVER (The one with the dragons at the start of disc 4 is too stunning for words....The style the music....Just briliant)

Also i enjoyed the skill system...kind of FF5 like

I,m a bit disapointed by the newer FF's....It seemed as though the dificulty went downhill after FF5 (Bar a few secret bosses) also the storylines seem to be aimed more at teanagers (FF10-2 >_<>_<>_<>_<_>_<>_<>_<><>)

Yup. I remember controlling Squall for 80 hours. His whinging, sulking and lack of actually learning anything from those around him proved to be one of the key factors in turning me away from the traditional Japanese RPG style in terms of character. It's hardly fair to say that every RPG from Japan are all situated on the same themes Squaresoft often explores, but just for once, I'd like to experience something which doesn't involve saving the near-or-post apocalyptic world (again) with a bunch of teenagers or overly elaborate anime-styled characters.

Not all of them do, but the overriding cliche, (and the exposure the West gets), is of these very extravaggent themes and ideas brought tiredly down by the so-called "epic" narrative. Sometimes I want the fantasties and the ideas in games which I engage myself with to be a little more subdued and less exuburent. To explore issues and reasonings I can relate to in a more social and humane manner.

How about experiencing the world in an RPG through the eyes of someone having a nervous breakdown while they're on the way to death in everyday life? Or through a collection of people who go about their lives unaware in isolation to each other, which you play as in various chapters?

Killer 7 looks to do this to a point (albeit in a very much more pulp-fiction orientated style), but to bring Eternal Darkness up as an example, I'd love to see a Japanese RPG explore more immediate social concerns we can relate to through forms of narrative that take in different perspectives that intertwine. It wouldn't neccessarily have to involve centuries and vastly changed outlooks in the form of Eternal Darkness.

I suppose you could say that there are dramas and story-book based 'interactive' manga already around which do such things, but I just keep thinking of Shenmue. A more subtle, down to earth, better acted (and directed) version of Shenmue, along with a few of the narrative ideas explored in Eternal Darkness (albeit more closely knitted) is something I'd love to see in a videogame.

To go slightly off topic, I remember Team Silent commenting during the development of Silent Hill 3, they had a choice of either going with a young girl (in the form of Heather) or an old aged man. Although I don't actually think Heather is a bad character, it'd be nice to see a twist on the J-RPG dynamic of story telling.

Put us in the shoes of someone we really don't expect to be placed inside of.

Can I ask if anyone has played FFIII? I hear translated roms can be found on the net and am quite intrigued considering the fact that it was never released in the west and that it's getting a DS port.

And for the record... 6, 9, 7 in that order. IMO
