so far I've used a PlayStation2 pad, a straw, a model of turok and a bread stick with various degrees of success.

Found this in NGC's guide to DS:

The following objects must not be used instread of the stylus:

- A toothpick
- Your nose
- A felt-tip pen with the lid off
- A shard of glass
- Jam
- A lamppost

Ah! So the stylus itself isn't the pressure sensitive component. I was worried that it would be, they'd be kinda spensive to replace.
