    Virtual On in Japan

Since my arrival on Christmas Eve I "hit" the arcades first thing. Mucked about on Zeta Gundam DX and Final Tuned, and then returned to my alma mater.

Force is still utter **** really. Wishy washy game mechanics and generally sluggish control responsivity. I thought I would come around after rinsing Marz, but it's still particularly poo.

Oratan 5.4 was where it was at though. Caned the main Nagoya machine in Sakae, got the fastest completion time. Pwned a few Japanese players too.

Admittedly, the skill level in Nagoya is pretty average so I went to Tokyo to test my wares in Shinjuku Sportsland 3 (which has now become a swish Club Sega).

Went up against a bunch of very good players (this time on Oratan 5.66). The matches were far closer, but I won almost all (so I still got it, w00t!). Everyone was really helpful discussing new tactics though and the scene is still as vibrant as it once was.

I also had a crack on the original 1995 Virtual On that they had a cabinet of. My GOD, this was a machine kept in pristine condition (I could pull off Single Frame Cancels one after another, which is far cry from my own Virtual On machine that has clearly had the **** kicked out of it over the years).

Overall, Virtual On is still the kick ass versus game I remember it to be.

Other than what I saw of Virtual On in the place you told me about in Shinjuku it was all about that Zoids game when I was out there, what do you think of that one? There was this next Gundam game that manz was rinsing kinda hard out there too!

Had a go on a few Zoids machines, wasn't overly impressed. Zeta Gundam DX is much better than I was expecting though. They have sorted out a lot of the ground based movement (though gameplay in space is still broken), they have also added a few extras into the game (by the way of extra MS and localised damage).

The new Gundam vs Zeta Gundam is a port of Zeta Gundam DX in case you were wondering.

Hey cacky, any chance you can ever do an Oratario Tangram tutorial piece? I sold my Twinsticks and the game because I just couldn't do anything on it, then I watched you play it at the meet and I instantly regretted selling the game. I still wouldn't know wtf to do without a decent tutorial though.
