I'm actuallyall for most of these rules, can't stand characters called rubbish like "L33tHazzor135", or level 1's who are called "King" something.

It's already launched in America and Australia. The Korean version isn't far off, it launches across the whole of Europe in February and the Chinese version is pencilled in for summer 2005.

If those original list of rules are true then it strikes me as going a bit far really. When you're paying a subscription fee to play the game then you should be able to chose any tasteful name you like.

If another player being called Batman or BritneyHaxor ruins your enjoyment of the game then you'd better not dare to look at any text chat:

"Back in a second guys, just getting food from the microwave"

OH NO!! I'VE JUST REALISED THAT I'M NOT REALLY A SPIKE-CLAD ELF AND AM ACTUALLY PLAYING A GAME ON MY PC WITH OTHER EVERYDAY PEOPLE. STAYING UP ALL NIGHT MINING THESE GOLD PIECES IS FUTILE, SCREW YOU BLIZZARD, I'M TAKING MY CUSTOM ELSEWHERE!

Blizzard don't enforce these rules that much either, I'm constantly seeing the same people with names which clearly violate these rules running around the place. ie Perfecttits, Fukmehard etc, generally being Night Elves

Fire, they're standard rules. If the FFXI website wasn't so ****e, I'd paste those. I suspect we'd find them fairly similar. You do get people flaunting the rules and they aren't stringently enforced.

I'd explain further, but you're just being facetious.

And I suppose it'd be fine if movie characters constantly referenced that they were in a movie, destroying any immersion in a fictional world that you might have built up...

                  Good point I suppose.

I can't imagine really getting immersed in an online title these days as I've accepted the fact that 90% of players seem to be morons.

Americans usually call me 'the Mushroom Guy', coz my Live tag is MushroomRatso.

A favourite for public quake servers back in the day was "his gay lover". Every console death announcement involving it pissed the enemy off even more; "Other player was railed by his gay lover", "Other player ate his gay lover's rocket", etc..

As for naming traditions, it's kinda good to see they're laying down some rules. They aren't too restrictive if you ask me, and in the long run I should imagine people will be thankful they didn't pick a ****e name which they thought was funny or cool at the time, but will be sick of in a month or so's time.

                            e.g., "Roflcopter"
best name ever, made me laugh for ages that one, especially how seriously they were talking about it hehe

I remember when I used to play Star Wars Galaxies (yes I'm sorry) They had similar restrictions on names. People always found some way around it though......

My mate had a rather stupid name, and SONY just changed it for him one day without even telling him. I think he had been playing for well over a month before they bothered.
