Not seen the review but that score is far too low. Quite enjoyed Yoshi.
    What were there criticisms?

That YUG score seems incredibly harsh. I got half way through the game until I had to sell it (the DS triggered migraines and the game didn't work with a GB Player) but it seemed to be very different and the short sections in each level offered genuine variety, the tilt sensor worked brilliantly too.

YUG main critisisms - no sense of being connected with the ground you are on. Tilt is implimented clumsily, collision detection is off - common to miss platform because despite being on a platform the game judges you arent. Visually poor. Unimaginative levels.

Basically its a critisism of the developer (Artoon - I didnt realise Nintendo werent making it) and that this game is just like the rest of their back catalogue dominated by ingenious ideas and poor execution.

Well I can honestly say I didn't notice any of the problems they had with the game. Visually poor is an odd one though I thought it looked great.

I quite enjoyed Yoshi too, easily a 6-7 for me. A 4 is harsh, that puts it in the realm of Yoshi's Story which was a pure insult to Yoshi's Island. Dissapointed with the 5 for 'King of Swing', that was looking very promising from the vids

Couple of annoyances for me -

              - Why was the lead review not the best game of the month? Surely Oddworld should have been first? Sadly they went for the predictable option instead.

              - The inside of the back cover implies PSP is the next step in handhelds beyond DS. Eh? Did I miss something?

Other than that a typically uneventfu/dulll issue. Read it for 15 mins than went back to Resident Evil 4. And speaking of which, there is a game which deserves a 10 if ever there was one.

I think what killed the series was that voxels weren't accellerated, so it just couldn't compete with what boring old polys were doing. I wonder if the fancypants shader pipelines on the PS2 make voxels possible again?
I doubt it, the shader units are geared towards Vector and fragment operations (read: things that make triangles get rendered quickly).

However, the one thing that vertex/fragment shaders *will* be used for more in-depth will be ray-tracing. So we can have all kinds of effects, such as this:

Well, as soon as we can pass mass amounts of triangles to the vertex shader, we will...but it'll come eventually

I remember voxels looking pig ugly.

I am a boor technically, though.

Outcast looked good at the time. Sure it looked different than 3D-accelerated polygon based games. The problem was that to play the game in high resolution and all effects on required a lot of power. It could either be run with bad fps or turning some of the graphics options down. But still with the graphics options down a notch and in low res it looked beautiful. Most of the games that used voxels didn't look like much but Outcast looked way better than them and the world was created with such imagination that it couldn't have been created as well with polygons.

Remember the amazing shots of Outcast 2? And on PS2 too.

Too bad it got cancelled. Would have been the prettiest PS2 by a long way.

Yoshi UG even got a hammering from the Official Nintendo Mag. Their criticism was much the same as Edge's too. Reckon I'll just wait for Catch! Touch! instead.

Just picked this up today (yeah, I'm late....). So far I've just read the columns and a few reviews.

All I'll say thus far is that the respect I have for Gary Penn can now be represented with negative numbers; "Games need more sex, gore and kiddie rape!!!!11111". Please.

I hope Penn is on a 6 month trial, like that Tokyo Game Life bloke. If I read the word ceremony one more time, I'm gonna go crazy mad. On the other hand, the Guest column is rather good. Swap Penn for the old Biffo one, and everyone will be happy.

Except Penn, but who cares what he thinks

Whats with Edge being 114 pages this month? The letters section has been shortened, they did mention that bit, but after doing a page count, it was 114, than the usual 130 pages :-/

That and the fact that the game uninstalled itself when you installed it probably had something to do with killing it. From the few hours I played of it it seemed like an absolutely wonderful game.
