Yeah the Ds's screen resolution is an absolute joke, not in a really bad way, just it is a joke when they could have made one of the screens at a higher resolution for 3d games. The DS is too weak to handle the best of the Nintendo 64, I mean take mario 64 for example, the Ds version really is pretty dire next to the Nintendo 64 version, look at the Ghost house level to draw a decent comparison and you will see what I mean. The textures are at a far lower res and there are obviously less polygons in the Ds version.

The screen res makes the game look muddy and hideous at times too, and when you consider the fact that mario 64 was a first gen N64 title and the first title at that, you really hae to question whether the Ds could handle Banjo Kazooie, or Goldeneye...never mind stuff like DK 64 or Perfect dark.

I dunno, maybe I am being a bit harsh on the DS but I really think the console could benefit from some sort of ram pack already for 3d software, as I think the machine would be better suited to 2d software or 3d which is not too ambitious like the saturns stuff, eg less polygons etc..

I hope I am proved wrong, but I really do not think the Ds could handle some of the larger levels in Goldeneye with the screen resolution it has without spoiling the great game that it is, and tarnishing it's great reputation.

less polygons? but all the coins etc are 3D rather than sprite based. Mario has more polygons in him, it's just the textures that bug me, tho from a distance they look great. It's also a quick port and definately no where near the full potential of the DS hardware. Thats like expecting Ridge Racers to be as good as a PSP game will ever look.

Once we see DS games that ahve had a full development cycle (the DS was only unveiled to developers 9-10 months before it launched and so everything so far has been a bit of a rush job in the 3D department) and been designed specifically for the machine rather than a ported game engine from different systems architecture, we'll start to get an idea of what the thing is really capable of.

I don't see why the N64 goldeneye can't be released on DS, so long as it's in colaboration with EA (i.e. Western F355 being published via Acclaim) it's perfectly feasable. Also Nintendo are currently strengthening their bond with EA as is clear from Nintendo Allstars in NBA Street Vol 3.

the frame rate in PD was fine, unless you used the expansion pack mode, Perfect dark remains unbeaten for multiplayer fps's, imagine if they could have a port, the ds's features would work a treat

The Hunters demo makes me salivate at the thought of DS FPSs...

The control was surprisingly great - a real revelation. The DS could be the first true platform for handheld FPSing. If sold right it could absolutely have that market to itself.

The only problem I had was strafing and aiming/shooting. That was a tad of an overload of simultaneous button-pressing/stylus fiddling.

Erm, you couldn't play the game proper without the expansion pak, just cut-down deathmatch...

You are really talking out of your ass now.

DS Mario 64 has MORE polygons than the N64 verison. The characters have higher poly counts, and some of the sprites are now fully 3D objects.

The textures are also 4x higher res on DS Mario. They are DIFFERENT textures too, so the colours and style is different.

True the DS lacks texture filtering and mip mapping, which the N64 had though.

              But basically you're spouting rubbish.

yes i know that, but you could set the resolution to a higher ratio to have better graphics, but a frame rate problem. and you could play it in the less detailed mode which had a good frame rate.

I recall no troublesome framerate probs in PD in hi-res mode, only in co-op.

Haven't played it for a while, though.

I actually prefer Mario 64 without the texture filtering. The game looks sharper as a result.

i bought my DS on tuesday and only bothered to even look at metroid prime last night, and frankly, i was blown away. i had zero expectations for 3d games on the DS since the screenshots have always looked awful, really pixellated and nasty. but in motion, it's extremely impressive and i'd say easily better than N64 quality. the control scheme is fantastic too, and within seconds i was strafing around the map with the dpad and aiming with the stylus in pretty much how i would with a pc+mouse.
i'll say this: i'm so impressed, i might actually buy the EA Bond game
