    The 'eureka' moment

In anticipation for Wipeout Pure, I've been recently playing through Wipeout 2097 and Wipeout 3: Special Edition again. Now, before, I used to find myself regularly getting my arse kicked on the quite frankly insane Phantom speed level.

    Not any more.

Something just clicked - I don't know it is, but I'm moving through both games at the highest class first-time through each race, feeling that I'm well on top of them. It isn't even strictly moving into the 'zone' (i.e. sub-conscious concentration), but more the awareness that I've made a sudden jump in skill level.

So... how about your selves? Have you ever felt that evolutionary leap just spring up on you, and been able to hammer something down that was previously near impossible? Something that delights you in being able to gain satisfaction from flooring the previously frustrating in one fell swoop?

What games have you experienced your 'eureka' moments from?

    Halo, Co-Op, The Library, Legendary.

I played through Halo so many times, but me and my mate played through it one night, and DAMN, it just felt so... right! Everything just went so well. Everytime we play through it now, it's just... perfect. We just play so well togther, it's just... clicked!

I know exactly what you mean, Concept.

Nights, ISS (snes)......seemed at the prime of my skill I could do whatever I wanted in ISS, had complete control over my action, and NiGHTS, well most know how that feels when your at top level.

A song will seem impossible, then you can jus suddenly get SSS.

Just did P-Mar Project (in my opinion the hardest track in Wipeout 3) on Phantom speed for the first time. Only took two goes.

          I don't know what I'm on tonight.

This is what gaming can offer that no other medium can in terms of being a participant.

          Accomplishment.

            REZ.

It doesn't usually take long for me to settle with this, but with a darkened room, loud as **** music, pad in had....it all just melts into place, a perfect fusion of light, sound and hypnotic concentration, combo's maxing out over and over and over......lovely, lovely.

I think the only game I've ever had that with is Lemmings and it's less of a skill/dexterity thing and more of simply working out what I had to do. But it's a great feeling all the same.

Polarium. Puzzle mode. Level 31 I think it was. Bugged me for a week. Couldn't figure it out. Then one night, I woke from a dream in the dead of night. With little sleep I switched on the DS to have another quick stab at it. In that first go, I solved it, unlocking the next 10 puzzles. Turned the machine off and went back to bed. Most of the other puzzles after that I found easy(ish)

****, actually, I've done that too. I was unable to get 100% shot down on lvl 2 and kill tera boss. But I got home, 2:00am, turned it on, darkened room, and I walked it. Just played better!

                    Stunning stuff

I had a 'eureka' moment on Rez a few weeks ago, when I managed 100% shotdown rate on Area 5 (no smart bombs used).

I'd always been between 95-100% on that area before.

And yup, Rez offers a similar buzz in a darkened room with headphones to Wipeout 2097 actually. I think they both release serious endorphins when they lure you into the zone.

                        Ridge Racer type 4.

I loved the original's but apart from the original I never had the money as a kid for Revoloution, Rage and Type 4 and could only play demo's.

Once I got type 4 it was the time when I had money and was playing DC racing games instead. So I never took the time and got frustrated with type 4 with drifting. After buying Daytonna usa 2001 I got the bug and revisted with an open mind.

It's now one of my favourte racing games ever made.

The only games i feel I accel at, and get into the "zone" or have that "eureka" moment is on fighting games.

Street Fighter 3 Third Strike (dont groan...it rocks ), most of the time when playing on live, I can just predict what the other opponent is gonna do, i can bait them into doing dumb mistakes so I can capitalise on it, parry almost everything that is thrown at me...oh man, i love this game. ^_^ So much depth, tactics, combos and mindgames, and so much more to learn.

Things just fall into place, and unknowingly i take advantage of the situation and keep the pressure on.

Oh and a few times on Metal Slug 3 i would just blitz through the game not losing a life and capturing all hostages...but somthing like someone walking into the room, or talking to me while i was doing it would break my concentration and I would have to press start, go to quit and begin again.

Also recently on Resi 4, I got to the shooting range bonus game and just instinctivley got all head shots on my first go.

Devil May Cry - Couldn't beat Mundus on DMD mode for the life of me. Must have had at least 30 cracks at him and then just got so pissed off that I turned it off.

Went back to it about 2 months later and absolutely minced him on my first go. Proper tortured him, I can't explain how I did it. I did the same thing on Viewtiful Joe on Ultra V-Rated against the end bosses.

                            Really, really weird...

I have never really had this feeling in a game maybe its just cos I don't find any game that hard.....

However when I am doing something else, like say uni work, and I suddenly get the exact answer in my head after thinking about it for ages its the best feeling in the world just letting everything in your mind tick over of how its going to work. I just love figuring stuff out in my head (apart from boring sums) its amazing! Brain = good Pity I can't put my thoughts on paper cos I absolutely stink at writing.
