Ape Escape remake PSP - mega load times

Just in case anyone is thinking of picking this up, it may be an idea to have a DS or GBA at hand while you're waiting to play it.

Mart picked this up today and the load times are horrible. There was a 40 second wait before the first screen came up and it took nearly two minutes before he was even able to start playing it.

I'm sure he'll post some comments tomorrow in first play, but I'm now in two minds about getting this. One of the things I love about handheld gaming is its immediacy, I'm dreading to think what the load times on Tony Hawks are going to be like...

Just out of interest (and let's not turn this into a DS or PSP bashing thread) how do people feel about the PSP load times now we've had them for a little while? Have there been any games where the loading time is putting you off, or does it not matter to you?

Well you've just put me off Ape Escape!! On a whole it was a bit wierd experiencing load times on a handheld, and they were quite off putting to start with. At the moment though, I can live with them as after the load is done you get a good length of time on the game. If however, I have to sit through a 30 second load for a couple of minutes gameplay, then I would certainly give the title a miss. I'm dreading what GTA will be like!

I've not been too fussed about the load times so far as I just accept them as part and parcel of disk based media. Ape Escape does sound like it suffers from it badly though! But then even with cartridges you get some delay as there's usually a slew of banners / copyright messages before you're allowed into the game.

See my thread on this about 2 months ago where I mentioned that the load times were a joke.

Ape Escape was the game I was looking forward to for my shiny new US PSP. Am actually quite worried now, the load times sound bad and I don't know how the controls will work.

In Ape Escape you always used the shoulder buttons to jump and control the camera, and the analogue sticks to move and swipe monkeys.
Part of this isn't possible on a PSP due to only one stick. How does moving/ netting work?
Also some people have gave bad reports on the shoulder buttons and finding them hard to reach when using the stick.

          Not good news.

bowser123, i dont think it's actually Ape Escape as you know it, but rather a collection of mini games?

There are 2 Ape Escapes aren't there? The mini-game one & a platformer (which I thought was a remake of AE on the PS1?)

So there is. My mistake One's called Ape Academy (the mini game) and Ape Escape On The Loose is t'other one.

So which one is being talked about here? I thought we were talking about the remake one.

Soory about the confusion, it is the remake and not the mini game one (although the load times on that are also a joke, and not a funny one...)

I think sitting through those pointless copyright screens on cart games is bad enough. You should be able to put the game in, turn on the system, and press start instantly. Gamers just couldn't care less about the publisher, it's an irrelevance.

PSP load times, I've only seen a few games (Ridge and Minna no Golf), and both I would consider to be 'far too long'. Ape Escape sounds even worse! I could never understand the logic behind optical media in a hand held. Flash media is getting cheaper all the time, and pretty spacious. Just sounds hard to justify causing the user to wait around for so long, not to mention the battery costs.

I'm just glad I have a modded Xbox with a big HD and can escape disc load times by and large, as they really can annoy.

That's true, but at least you have something to look at
It's quite worrying when you turn your psp on and it remains blank for about 30 seconds...

Isn't the PSP media essentially a Gamecube disc in a plastic case? If so, why does the cube have 2 second load times max?

Any idea on the control stuff I mentioned Strider?

I'll get mart to post some impressions mate.

Edit - Apparantly its fine. X to jump, circle to net things, right shoulder to crouch and square to use your stun button.
