    Edge scores.

Theres an article in this months Edge looking into the Laws of reveiwing.

As a test case, each Edge reviewer scores PN:03.

And just to be clever about it, all the main reviews are given are score ? out of 10. You decide or predict what the game got from the review text.

BUT they've included the actually Edge scores out of 10 at the end of the review section.

    And here they are:

    Soul Calibre 2 - 9/10

    Amplitude - 8/10

    Silent Hill 3 - 7/10

    PN:03 - 7/10

Eve Online: The Second Genesis - 8/10

Breath of Fireragon Quarter - 7/10

    Dondonpachiai-Ou-Jou - 8/10

    MotoGP:UltimateRacing Technology 2 - 8/10

    Clock Tower 3 - 3/10

    Vietcong - 5/10

    Golden Sun:The Lost Ade - 6/10

    Made in Wario - 7/10

    WW2:Frontline Command - 5/10

    Dynasty Warriors 4 - 7/10

    Warrior Kings: Battles - 5/10

    Medieval:Total War:Viking Invasion - 7/10

    Tao Feng:Fist of the Lotus - 5/10

    The PN:03 Test Case scores:

    Zy Nicholson - 6/10
    Ste Curran - 5/10
    Owain Bennallack - 7/10
    Kieron Gillen - 4/10
    Margaret Robertson - 6/10

        VF4 Evo - 6/10 because its only a slight upgrade over VF4

SC2 - 9/10 when its only a slight upgrade of SC

        I just love consistancy.

BTW isn't Zy Nicholson Radion Automatic from Mean Machines??

Im not sure what was actually achieved by not including a score at the end of the review as you need only turn a few pages to see the score it would have been given anyways. It seemed very half-hearted, like they wanted to make a statement but didnt want to risk pissing off their readers, when a definite stance of either including review scores or not at all would have been better imo. Ill give the magazine a proper read this afternoon, but initially I dont see the sense in this.

Hmmm. Disappointing score for SH3, and CT3 isn't THAT bad, ffs. I think I'll have to buy this oddity of a magazine this month the see their explanation.

              Good score for Dodonpachi though.

Not discussing here the merits of both games, just pointing they are, in a sense, consistent:

                    VF4 7/10 -> VF4 Evo 7/10 (not 6/10)
                    SC1 9/10 -> SC2 9/10

I cant take these people seriously anymore. I actually used to use Edge to decide what games to buy - I had so much respect for the mag and it's reviewers, I made so many mistakes and wasted a lot of money on games due to their poor reviews - the games they score so highly just didnt appeal to me at all, I didnt know what was going on - I thought I was missing something and blamed myslef for not getting into the same stuff as them. They are always going on about how important gameplay is - so why do they ignore what has been done with VF4 Evo? Evo is as much a step up from VF4 as VF2 is to VF4 - Soul Calibur 2 is not s big step up from Soul Calibur, in fact it hasnt stepped anywhere. To suggest that Dodonpachi deserves an 8 (higher that Shinkigami and Psyvariar) is a complete joke.

To me now - it seems these guys play in a complete vacuum. They have no idea what kind of a scene many of the games are creating with players and totally miss the point in most reviews.

EDGE have generally always marked the Silent Hill games down.

Silent Hill = 8/10 (should have been 9/10)
                          Silent Hill 2 = 7/10 (should have been 8/10)

I simply don't hold EDGE's reviews in high opinion, so any score they give a game can usually be taken with a pinch of salt these days. Until I've played Silent Hill 3 myself, I certainly won't be losing any sleep over their score.

should have been 9, should have been 8!?! In whose opinion? What justification?

Indeed, though this is undeniably a relatively conservative sequel, since every other beat 'em up franchise has singualarly failed to learn anything from Soul Calibr's brilliance, any similarity is no bad thing. with ever other beat 'em up having failed to equal, let alone exceed the original, it seems churlish to criticise the sequel for merely matching matching and updating it. Ultimatley, though it might not have the same historic impact, this is a game that's superior to it's predecessor in almost every way.
Which means that it's also superior to every other 3D beat 'em up.
I wonder, did this train of thought ever get applied to VF4:Evo?

                              Apprantly not.
