Without stepping on any toes 46P refers to the joystick command based on your keyboard's numpad layout.

      789
      456
      123

(Where 5 is the joystick in neutral position on the 1 player side)

      So 46P simply means "back,forward+punch"

I still prefer the old "d,df,f+p" style myself...quicker for me to picture

Christ. Reading this stuff baffles me, yet back in the day I was fierce on SF2 (ah, the joys of selective memory).

What's a good character to start with in SFIII? I've been getting my head round Ibuki, (abandoning the usual Ryu in favour of trying something new) but overall she doesn't seem that high up on the rung. Which are the best characters?

Also, in training mode, what's the best way to pracice? I've just started to parry more often so I feel like I'm making progress, but all this guard cancelling and whatever?? It feels like it's going to take years ...

          Cheers,

          Jay

Chun-Li is a very good character but she's pretty much purely dependant on match technique. Her normal moves are some of the best in the game by far, do good damage and have incredible reach/priority. She doesn't have any particularly good combos. Buffering is piss easy with her (low forward = free super) and her kick super will snuff fireballs from close range. Basically you won't get a flashy match with her, that's not what she's about. What you need to do is keep using normals to build up meter (as her super is excellent), don't worry if they whiff, her speed means she can rarely be punished.

Don't worry about who is the best character, that's a ****ty way to decide who to learn. Top tier though is:

            Urien
            Makoto
            Yun

All three are extremely hard to learn.

            Anyway I play as:

            Chun-Li
            Ryu

Cheers for the info. And you're right about deciding on which characters to use. I'll stick with Ibuki for now.

btw, what does 'forward = free super' mean?

              Cheers,

              Jay

I am really enjoying Evo and have started dwelling deeper into the game mechanics. But I don't fully understand "buffering". Go on Saur, lecture me on it

I know this one. *jumps about with glee*

Buffering is where you're inputting your next move before the current one has finished. In old-school terms, let's say you;re using Guile. Now Guile's Sonic Boom is performed by pushing back on the stick for a second or so, then forwards and punch. You can buffer this to reduce the time you would normally have to wait. eg - if you were to jump forwards to do say a flying kick, as soon as you've press diagonally up + forward, you immediately pull back on the joystick. At this point, although Guile is still flying through the air, you're buffering his Sonic Boom. As he lands, push forward and press punch et voila you buffered a Sonic Boom.

Sounds as though buffering these days takes place at the rate of three moves ahead which make my old head implode trying to keep up.

*looks up* oh, worst explanation ever. Where's saur ... ?

To put it simply, its basically continually being one (or maybe two ) steps ahead of your current move, in order to pre-empt your opponents manoveurs, and link loads moves into a chain, innit? Its like the computer catching up with your fast thinking mind.

                      Or I could be wrong.

Doing jabs or hop kicks whilst charging sonic booms is totally Xbox.

Ha ha. I said I was behind didn't I? It's still buffering in my book. Pah.

This is "buffereing" or as it was called back in the day "2 in 1's"

2 in 1's are when regular punch/kick is interrupted with a special move and is unblockable after the inital punch/kick, only certain kick/punch's can be 2 in 1 'd into special move so just experiment what goes into what

Sorry about the quality of the vid, i ripped it in mame:l
