What is the most impressive A.I ever?

Ever since I have indulged in the delights of VF4Evo, I have found it to be superior to all fighters for one simple reason - it's A.I. Unlike most fighters, you can generally get good at Evo by fighting against the CPU. The A.I is based upon the best EVO players around and the CPU just doesnt seem to hit random punches and kicks, it actually examines what you are doing and plays accordingly. This is why Evo is better than SC2 IMO. There is a certain limit to which you can enjoy and perfect SC2, but with Evo the limits are huge. This makes me wonder what other games contain such advanced A.I?

After reading the back of the box, I would have said Black & White.

But then I played the damn thing and realised I had absolutely no control over my monster at all

Possibly the Covenant in Halo. They will retreat to a better position and regroup if they are outgunned and genuinely work together to defeat you.

the Black Ops team in Half-Life were also pretty good for 1998.

        Haha yeah I remember those.

The first time I met them they hid from me, they shot me, and they generally out smarted me. I couldnt believe it, it was great.

One of them popped out from behind a pillar and chucked a hand grenade at me. I couldnt believe it!

I ran back away from the hand grenade and then watched the entire black ops team run forward straight into the grenade blast

But for 1998, it was great.

Depends what you mean by "Best".

If you mean the most realistic, then I'd have to be a little retro and say them marines in Half Life. Working as a team, and being total bitches.

Metal Gear Solid 2 had the most "fun" AI. The enemies were pretty thick, but they made sneaking around them really fun.

However, the cleverest AI has to be the AI from Puzzle Fighter 2 Turbo. Watching them stack up the biggest combos have to be seen to be believed, it truly is awesome.

And as for a fighting game, i'm going to have to go for VF4 Evo as well. I've been amazed at the range of styles the AI can simulate, and makes the quest mode a pleasure to play.

As stated before, it depends on the genre and context of the game....

But for me, well it's Halo innit...

Best AI in a beat em up is blatantly Evo, in fact it's in a league of it's own. They have managed to get the AIs to feel just like challenging a human opponent - you notice the difference immediately, you cannot use simple tactics as you would a CPU opponent. I cant get over how you can play mind games with it >_< you can fake and cancel attacks to make it fall for the same stuff human players do. Some fighters even have bad habits!! Like certain skank player who keep using crouching low punch to open you up for attack! (I'll stop now before I explode >_&lt

Yeah Evo is class, however I totally agree with Boogaloo - the A.I in Super Puzzle Figher 2 is unbelievable, its hard as nails in places!

Got to agree with Saur and Sidez, you can't predict what the A.I is going to do, it is unbelievable. I don't even need to go to the arcade to get better at Evo

Nah man you dont get me

The reason my head is blowing up is because you CAN predict the AIs in Evo - exactly the same way you can work out human player's techs. When fighting a CPU the fight makes makes no sence, it's random, it doesnt use tactics, it doesnt learn, it doesnt try to trick you by faking high then attacking low, or not throwing an attack if it thinks you (may) have covered against the move.

For example I know for a fact that the player "HactionLau" keeps trying to score counter hits with low jabs. So through playing him quite a few times I know that if he gets up from being knocked down near me he is going to throw a low punch to try and catch me offgaurd to deliver something more powerful. I counter that punch every time he throws it - but by the 3rd round he wont do that anymore and try to grab you. That is how advanced the AI is in Evo!

I love it when the AI turtles and keeps trying to do low punches. Free 3+G+P+K thank you very much :P Eventually they'll get the idea and attack standing up so they can eat m4d k0/\/\80z

I agree the evo AI is outstanding never bever have you been able to apply real human tactics to a cpu, sega how the ****!? This needs to be the standard now for all future AI's.

It's funny as hell but true!

My friend was saying about how they should put the option in so you can hear the challenger's buttons - he cannot get his head around the fact that these are AIs, as they fight and feel like people. But he's absolutely right: if you could hear buttons you wouldnt be able to tell the difference between human and AI challenges.

The AI in Evo may be very impressive, but is a regular player like me going to notice it? Though maybe that's a test. That the player never thinks that the AI's impressive, but just lets it handle how it's meant to. I'd say that a casual player would expect the AI to act like a real person, and not understand how impressive it is.
Not having played Evo, I'd say that the Marines in HL were probably the most intelligent enemies I've fought, even if they were mostly scripted. Also, the bots in a couple of FPSs (Quake3 and JK2) were pretty impressive.
