    Arcade Cab Dilemma

Basically my wonderful Missus has offered to buy me an Astro City Candy Cab from the new batch that Killer Cabs are getting.

Now obviously i'm absolutely chuffed to bits. I've wanted my own cabinet for what seems like for ever, but for some reason or another i could either not afford it when one i liked was available or just couldn't justify the cost. Now, thats not an issue so you'd think that everything would be great wouldn't you?

Not so unfortunately. Basically i've got nagging doubts at the back of my mind that having finally gotten my own cabinet i'll either :

    a) Become obsessed with it thus rendering a lot of console stuff worthless in my mind. I'll be the first to admit that i can be extremely snobbish when it comes to videogame's. I can quite easily see myself ignoring home ports of some great games just because i've got some crazy idea in my head that only the proper arcade version is good enough. Even now i've got no interest in emulation and when you think about it a home port of an arcade game is even worse than that. If money was no object then this wouldn't be a problem as i could just buy the arcade version everytime. Since money does have to come into consideration, in most cases i'll only be able to afford the console version. I just don't want to ruin my enjoyment of these.

    b) Play on the cab for a month or so but then revert back to the 'easier' route of console gaming because it's proving extremely difficult and / or expensive to get hold the PCBs i want. As cool as a mint Astro City would look in my games room, its going to cost far too much for it to be not much more than an ornament.

So what i'm looking for are the views and experience of other arcade cabinet owners, especially those with a slightly obbsessive personality which i guess you must have to some degree to even consider buying one in the first place. How has it effected your game playing? Was it for better or worse? Looking back honestly would you still have bought one?

Once that cabinet is in your house you will know you made the right decision.
It is impossible that you would be dissapointed or anything, especially with a New Astro City Cab, I have one myself too!
Also, make sure to get the NEW Astro cab, not the normal astro cab.

I know where you're coming from.

Some of the games are pretty damn expensive on PCB (especially the non mainstream jap shooters) but the games generally hold their value if they're fairly old.

The vast majority of boards are actually fairly cheap. If you decide to go for Neo Geo games then you'll not pay more than ?40, no matter what the title (metal slugs included).

I'd go for it personally, there's nothing quite like the blinking 'insert coin' message.

What`s the difference with the new astro cab, and the normal astro cab apart from the look of the speakers.

Welcome to the club. I'm getting one too. Already have one of the Super Neo replicas and it's changed my life....well, ish.
Seriously, you won't regret it, and yes I've found it's taking me away from console gaming big time. There's nothing quite like it after years of shoddy 16 bit conversions. You'll bin your MD and buy half your Saturn games again proper.

Apparently you can't remove the control panel on the older models, which will make it an absolute bastard to get through house door sized holes.

They are the same, got my Neo Replica cab from them. Tony is the main man and he's done a fair bit of business with peeps on here.

I beg you do not pass up this oportunity. I got my cab almost a year ago and it's absolutely great. I mostly play Neo-Geo stuff, primarily because it is cheap and generally pretty groovy, plus it's cart based and easy to handle/store.

And you know something else, you're absolutely right you won't want the home versions of stuff you know you can get on arcade. Because somehow the arcade stuff does feel like the real thing. You'll need discipline, only buy the expensive games you really really want and know you will be playing for months if not years. You could even rig up the coin mech and pay to play. Using it as a sort of piggy bank.
