Soul Calibur -Help needed for a fighting newbie

Didn't know wether this was the best folder to ask this but I guess it'll be moved if not... it seemed the most appropriate.

Anyway, I've just picked up Soul Calibur on the DC and it's great. Trouble is, I'm useless at it... it's the first fighter i've got stuck into since Street Fighter 2 on the arcade all those years ago!

I'm just having a spot of trouble finding the unblockable moves/specials.

I've been in training mode and viewed the move list and practiced a few but it's a bit confusing. Specifically, i've been using Maxi and it seems you have to get into some sort of stance before you can do the specials, for example Left Outer, Right Inner etc How do you do this?

I'm trying to do the training mission where you have to hit the master with an unblockable but it's driving me insane... am I being completely stupid and missing something here?

I really don't recommend using Maxi, he may seem really fancy and it's easy to press all sorts of buttons to some flashy canned combos but these will just get you killed and make you pick up bad habits.

Choose someone else, work out their launchers (which are exactly as they sound, smack 'em up then keep beating them as they fall), which moves stun or are unblockable, practice parry timing (not hard) and how to make best use of the 8 way run system. Also not all the moves that a character has will be all that useful. Try not to be predictable but stick to the best moves available to you.

Cheers. I've been warned against using Maxi elsewhere too... I'll give another character a go.

I'm really impressed by the game so far, the graphics in particular are stunning and still hold up well against PS2, X-Box and GC games. Saying that, i've been impressed with the DC in general in this respect... not a bad buy for ?20 odd.

I prefer the original to the sequel, keep at it. Well worth getting up to a decent standard. Try putting the difficulty to ultra hard, on the lower difficulties the CPU makes barely any effort to punish your mistakes.

Yeah I noticed that. In fact i've already put it up a couple of levels because the CPU didn't actually come at me... I wanted to increase my blocking and dodging skills but on normal, the CPU just stood there.

I'll be getting the US GC version of SC2 when it arrives. My mate is gonna get the PS2 version so at least I'll have some human competition.

If you have an Xbox then get SC2 on that, it's noticeably the best version.

I wish... I've only got a GC unfortunately. Although I don't even get enough time to play on the games I do have! Still gotta complete Zelda and Metroid Prime.

On a side note... is it worth getting hold of a DC arcade stick? It would be cool for Soul Calibur. Are they made well, sturdy etc?

DC arcade sticks are fabulous, made from really arcade parts so they're built to last. Well recommended, essentiel even.

                  Indeed.

In fact stop playing SC now until you get an arcade stick
