The amount of bitching being done about the teaser (not here obviously) is absolutely insane. You'd swear that Bethesda had turned the franchise into a Sports Sim by the way some people are carrying on - it's really depressing reading and led me to the conclusion that the majority of Fallout fans are bat **** crazy (present company accepted of course).

Personally I think it shows real promise and they've got the tone just right. After Oblivion I've got high hopes.
Yeah, it's ridiculous and it just makes me think certain hardcore Fallout fans are a real spoilt bunch.

There are long dead offbeat series whose fans would absolutely kill for to be renewed, original developers included or not. Instead they're receiving a new entry into their series whereby the trailer doesn't quite have the correct pixel in place at time stamp 1 minute and 12.

As for the teaser itself speaking from a neutral perspective, I was quite impressed by it considering Bethesda have said it's in-engine. Fallout certainly seems to have distinctive atmosphere.

I likes the look of this, tbh i'll be glad just to play an RPG that isnt a bloody high fantasy elves and orcs setting.

I imagine the current noise will be completely dwarfed once the interface is presented, given that it's a cross PC/console release. Same as we saw for Oblivion/DX:IW etc.

Glad it is coming to consoles though, haven't played a Fallout game before but I very much like the style from what I've seen so far.

There are scans of the GameInformer article floating around now.

Looks very very impressive visually - kind of like a next generation S.t.a.l.k.e.r. and seems to depict the post-apocalyptic world really well (especially given that it's over a year away from being finished).

          Some highlights:

+ uses a vastly updated Oblivion engine.

+ starts off with you being born and raised in the Vault. Not a really large section of the game but designed to relay the sad state of being brought up in forced captivity as well as acting as the tutorial / character generation.

+ can be played first or third person

+ enemies won't scale in difficulty like Oblivion. Wander in to an area when you're a low skill and you'll get slaughtered.

+ despite it's appearance it's not designed as a FPS and you can't play it as such. The Vault Assisted Targeting System on your Pip-boy 3000 allows you to slow down time and plan attacks on parts of enemies etc (kind of like what we've seen in Mass Effect). There are a set number of action points for the player and while you could wildly strafe around shooting things in first person, the depletion of the the action points means it'll be incredibly difficult to survive.

+ Karma system returns and no playing the all rounder of good and evil like in Oblivion. While there are multiple paths, doing some things will send you down a particular path which closes off some missions. But at the same time it opens up new ones.

It isn't just good or evil though as there as still shades of grey.

"It's more about how you handle these different situations and less which ones you do and in what order".

+ slightly smaller area than Oblivion, but it's still huge. Less NPC's too, given that it's an apocalyptic waste land. This means more time spent on making the NPC's much more believable.

+ Liam Neeson doing the voice work as well as Ron Pearlman

That sounds fantastic. If they pull off the combat, that is. That's always been Bethesda's weak point.

This shouldbe cool, I only played a small section of fallout before I reduced to using trainers etc (curse you lack of time/weak wills/pc gaming) but I really enjoyed the overall scale and sense of freedom they the first 2 games offered, aswell as the very distinct sense of humour, hopefully they keep that.

After being totally sucked into Oblivion I really can't wait to see how this turns out

Those scans don't really show us whether its turn based or not. The one shot of the hit points do suggest that perhaps it will be. Either way it's looking excellent, the NPC on one scan looks superb and much better than the strange looking npcs in oblivion

The scans look fantastic. Really looking forward to this.

LittleBigPlanet. Alan Wake. MGS4. PGR4. Resident Evil 5. Fable 2 (maybe). Halo Wars. Spore. Starcraft 2. Fallout 3.

2008 is starting to shape up nicely.

All in all I'm starting to get overly excited about this, I was worried but I'm getting optimistic all over again

Give us the option for groin shots and I'll be in gaming heaven

Major Nelson interviewed one of the Bethesda guys about this on his latest podcast. Sounds really great, and given how many of us were hooked on Oblivion... could be one of 2008's real highlights.

Can't believe i havent seen any of this before. I have shifted into a new hype-mode!

Anyone know if this is term based combat, or like oblivions combat?

Supposed to be similar to Oblivions combat (FPS) but with the Fallout stat/skill system.
