    Best modern rally game

I've been getting back into Colin McRae 3 over the last few nights. It's an excellent installment in the series but the lack of real splitscreen mode really bugs me. I remember playing Colin McRae 1 loads in splitscreen as you could play a whole country with cumulative times and you could bash your opponent all over the shop, so much fun. Since then all the McRae games have the stupid ghost racing crap which is totally uninvolving, and makes multiplayer pointless IMO.

So I'm just wondering what the general consensus is on the best Rally game and also do any of the lesser Rally titles (ie not McRae) have a proper spitscreen?

    Cheers

Depends what you mean by modern, but Sega Rally is the best rally game IMO.

Rallisport 2 for Xbox. Feels nice, looks stunning, has fun online play, it's my fave by a long way.
Sega Rally does rock mind you

        It has to be RalliSport2

The game is totally stunning with loads of great tracks and tons of variety. I love the control in this game- it feels a lot like Sega Rally only more advanced. The sound is also excellent- with everything except the music really setting the mood!

I can't say anything bad about this game- its AAA!

A lot of people have been harsh towards the game though. Edge gave it a tiny review and dismissed it as just another Rally game 6/10 I also heard the game sold a tiny amount of copies- which doesn't bode well for a 3rd iteration!

If you think CMR3 is good then try CMR4, it's basically the game number 3 should have been, but in my opinion I feel it's pretty poor (the central pivot steering is just plain lazy in this day and age). Personally I like my rally racers to be a bit more realistic, so Richard Burns Rally gets the thumbs up from me, but I'm also rather partial to a bit of Rallisport 2 for sheer arcade racer thrills.

Sega Rally is great no doubt but I felt that the DC version was very poor, it just didn't feel right. The tarmac levels in particular were awful, with nonsense handling. Plus it's not really a rally game a heart but an arcade game designed to eat money.

Rallisport 2 does look nice, but I was put off getting it by the afformentioned Edge review. It said the handling / physics were basically too toy-like, and didn't punish bad driving. What's the offline multiplayer like?

All I'm looking for is a realistic rally game with great multiplayer like the first McRae.

let me be the first to say the Edge review for Rallisport 2 is full of ****, it truly is the best Rally game of this generation. The graphics are amazing and the handling/drifting is spot on...How edge can say it doesn't punish bad driving is beyond me, damage to your car can seriously affect performance and on the tougher cups every millisecond counts.

Also, it's only ?13.98 WITH a live kit at amazon.co.uk!!! STEAL!!!!

I guess the Edge reviewers didn't experience missing gears, the car pulling to one side or not being able to accelerate because you just lost 3 wheels .

EDGE playing the game for all of 5 mins strikes again.
RS II is ace and top fun online. Also CM 4 and Burns Rally games are the tops.

Nothing beats SEGA Rally on the Saturn though. Best control and handling found in any racer

Sega Rally on Saturn. Nothing comes close to the sheer playability of that game.

Although Colin McRae Rally 2 is pretty good too if you like a bit of realism in your rally games.

Rallisport 2 for me. It's so controllable in the way only Sega Rally ever was before it. The ice racing is hilarious too.

Sega Rally, on a Saturn, with the analogue wheel is marvellous, yes (good car boot sale luck, that).

Of the modern ones, I'm rather partial to Sony's WRC series - the handling is realistic enough to feel deep, without being so punishing that it's too much hard work (I'm looking at you, Richard Burns).

                              The problem is I'm biased.

The Colin's of the past were great (1 & 2), Sega Rally is arcade action at its finest, whilst Rallisport 2 is great fun. WRC4 is a bit of a hidden gem which unfortunately is often overlooked, but hopefully that won't be the case with WRC: Rally Evolution.
