    DOOM ported to the iPod.

    Features

    Mostly playable I need to sift through the Doom post for some key binds.

    Can load game saves.

    Can save game.

    Plays all wad files: Doom I Shareware (won't play demos), Doom II Shareware, Ultimate Doom, Final Doom wads, and Doom II. Also unless you want Doom to crash in the menu put the help files in the folder too.
    Anybody care to test it?

      It looks just about playable. Download the video and have a look. It looks almost as smooth as PGR2.

          I don't get this at all.

          iPod = Music
          DS = Games

          Why put yourself to all the effort to get a half-baked load of uncontrollable bollocks?

            Because programmers like to tinker with stuff. If you follow your train of thought, why make games at all? Wouldn't the collective programming talent in the games industry be better used writing software to analyse medical scans for signs of disease?

            Fun don't gotta make sense.

              Mainly it's because the entire Doom source is available, and it's a decent game. At the moment, this is all about porting things just to see what is possible. Since anyone can legally go grab the Doom source, and people have already ported it to everything from the Amiga to a digital camera, the ins and outs of getting it up and running on a new platform is fairly well known.

              This isn't really about playing Doom on your iPod so much as it is about getting code running on your iPod, so we can then move on to doing other new things with it. I'd love to see a Thrust-type game up and running, using the wheel to rotate and the button to thrust, or a 720 Degrees clone.

                Because they can. Trying to install Linux on a toaster can only hold their attention for so long.

                  Fair enuff, the challenge of getting code to run on any given device = challenge.

                  But why not port something suitable, using the interface of the pod in an interesting way.

                    Because, as I mentioned, that involves writing brand new code, developing a game from scratch with all the complexity that involves. The Doom source is just sitting there ready.

                        Plus Doom will get you infinitely more publicity and recognition than "random generic homebrew block puzzle that looks thrown together in ten minutes".

                          This is the reason I stopped reading slashdot. Their facination with porting doom or linux to miscellanious bollocks really started to bore me to tears.

                            Speaking of which, this just popped up in my RSS reader. I was being facetious with the toaster comment!

                              Do it yourself then.

                              Or are you a lazy git?
