I think, looking back on it now, that I was lured to the PS1 by Tekken.A good few years on, and with my import gaming head on, I can't believe I was so excited by such a dire PAL translation. Still - it kicked ass back then, and made me get a PS1. As it goes I didn't buy the console, but my good friend who happened to be the son of former Acclaim CEO Rod Cousens got one for me, bless him.

Teh killa appz on 16 bit were Ghouls & Ghosts and Golden Axe on the MD, because they were at that point the two bestest arcade conversions I had seen, although when the SNES came out, I can remember being very excited by Final Fight, Super Ghouls & Ghosts and Street Fighter 2. These were the titles that made me want the consoles.

Others that have made me wanna: Amiga - Sensible Soccer, R-Type
Dreamcast - Streetfighter III series and wealth of Capcom goodness
Saturn - teh Capcom 2D goodness, particularly X-Men vs SF
Neo Geo - 2D fighters (what else!?!)
    N64 - OOT

Agree with seany1979, it was the arcade conversions that got me buying consoles back in the day. Strider and Golden Axe were a huge part of that.

More recently I got my Cube so I could do the trench run and blow up the Death Star and my PS2 to play Rez. Feel the Magic sold me the DS. VJ Battle Carnival could well sell me the PSP.

Halo made me buy an Xbox, and nothing else has come close. god knows how many hours i've lost to Silent Cartographer - even thinking about it makes me want to go home and play it pity the same can't be said for the sequel though. and Ninja Gaiden/DoA3/DoA: XBV - just for the fact they are shiny and nice to look at.

WipeOut for the PS1 was, and still is, a wonderful racing game despite the PAL border mania.
Powerstone for the Dreamcast is stupid fun, and i got my GC to play Metroid Prime but that was overtaken by the Biohazard remake.

and i'm seriously thinking about shelling out for a PSP, only to play Ridge Racers. poor the bingowings

I always wonder why console manufacturers fail to get a killer line up at launch. The dreamcast/psone/saturn/ps2/gamecube/xbox none of there launch lineup excited me it was many months more i bought any of them.

For example the gamecube eventually it did have some killer games but i always thought what would have happened if the gamecube launched with zelda/mario/fzero/metroid prime/viewtiful joe.

In the past I've usually got new consoles simply because they were new, and I was sufficiently interested to just buy them regardless of launch games or whatever.

The two exceptions - consoles where I held out and wasn't particularly bothered until I saw or tried particular games were the PS2 with Frequency, and the Dreamcast with Soul Calibur. One session on Frequency and a couple of minutes staring at the demo modes on SC and I simply had to have those games.

anything pre dreamcast time my mum got me them so they don't count.

dreamcast- the fact that it was ?99 with 3 games one christmas when i was in toysrus.
N64 the fact it was about ?30 with a game.
xbox- seen the videos of halo, amped and pgr was enough for me.
PS2- the fact it dropped to ?99 and the fact i could play pro evo, GT3 ect
gamecube- star fox the 1st time the 2nd,3rd and 4th times it was because they were cheap with a few games
