Nintendo's Legal Information Page & PSPs

I've just had a read on one of the Nintendo site about copyright and stuff and I found this:

    Are Game Copying Devices Illegal?

Yes. Game copiers enable users to illegally copy video game software onto floppy disks, writeable compact disks or the hard drive of a personal computer. They enable the user to make, play and distribute illegal copies of video game software which violates Nintendo's copyrights and trademarks. These devices also allow for the uploading and downloading of ROMs to and from the Internet. Based upon the functions of these devices, they are illegal.
Judging by what you can do with a Sony PSP, and based on what Nintendo has written, doesnt that make the PSP an illegal device?

How so? People made the software to run on the PSP, it wasn't designed to run it and they tried to avoid and are actively updating firmware as much as they can to stop it.

Well, from reading stuff around the internet, you can dump from a UMD to a memory card.

I also hear you can copy Xbox games to the hard drive...

and of course you can't buy a 'memory card' for the GBA that allows you do just this.

I don't get what you are trying to say.

Yeah you can, but Sony are hardly encouraging it or using it as a selling point are they?

In fact they have been trying to stop the running of such stuff from the mem cards via updating the firmware.

I suppose that's the difference between an actual device that promotes piracy and a device that doesn't.

But even if Sony are actively trying to prevent this from happening again, don't you think they would of just stop releasing downloadable patches and just make the new games or machine to automatically update the firmware? Because if the user does try to stop the firmware update, while its updating itself, it will just bugger up their machine. They will then have to get a replacement and that replacement will have the new firmware already installed.

PSP games released since May 1 have required firmware updates to run. The updates have been included on the UMDs.

You can't plug a Ds game into a PSP and copy it, I think it is that kind of device they are reffering to

Yes it is mate, the PSP is a separetly sold peice of hardware designed to play it's own media and game's, unlike the magicom's and Super wild cards of the past.

I think that we have pretty much debated this as far as it can go.
