I knew this game woudnt disappoint, for serious it's one of the best games I have played in ages (and I only have the first level! XD)
You start the game and as normal Joe you run at the first enemy, the screen shifts into an a timeless zone where the controls are explained. If the enemy attacks high - push down to duck, if the attack is low - push up to jump it (punches and kicks flow out seamless no matter what you are doing). What makes it class is you are pre-warned of attacks by a high or low marker - if you dodge the attack the enemy is mesmerised and every following hit will be classed as Viewtiful. The punch and kick are on seperate buttons (X & Y) jump is on A, this is a bit funny at first if you are used to having up as jump in beat em ups, but after 10 minutes with it you LOVE IT!
You can chain punches and kicks together any way you like, down + punch is a Marvel Vs Capcom style air juggle launcher, you can string it into anything (I love putting it at the end of a footsweep cos....it's just so RIGHT! XD) - push jump after you launch an enemy and you have full freedom to string any air combo you want!
You hit Z button after leanring the system to seamlessly return to the game (the screen shifts back to the gameworld with you in mid combo and you carry on), you carry on battering the henchmen as you go and are grading at the end of each section alphabetically (V is the highest grade - get V for time, defence and combo and you get "Viewtiful")
You come across Captain Blue who teaches Joe how to unleash the "Hero-ness"
inside him. Here's where is gets so SIIICK!!!111 XD
The L button is 'SLOW' (as far as I care it's
*BULLET TIME!*
) and Bullet Time == Neo levels of sickness!
The R button is "MACH SPEED" which is like a supermove where you can chain anything together stupidly fast)
This MAKES the game man! The freedom it gives you to make your play look better than anything I've seen in anime (and it's all down to your own flair and imagination) - it's incredible!
Now the combos get GRIMY! You dodge an attack counter with a PPKP2K2P Jump up to follow for the air combo, hit L button to go into SLOW and watch in awe as every punch and kick you throw connects with such force! and it's SO SLOW you get to see each connection exagerrated beyond what your head can take! XD - this combo will be classed as Viewtiful as you dodged an attack to start it, putting SLOW on the end makes the following moves you throw connect with devastating force which sends the enemy flying. Both SLOW and MACH SPEED drain the VFX bar at the top of the screen, MACH SPEED drains it much faster than SLOW (thank god 8)) - if your VFX bar drains completely, Joe loses his Hero power until it builds back up to a set level. During SLOW you cant take hits - Joe will take the absolute piss and weave and dodge ANYTHING thrown it him, but at a price. These Bullet Time dodges drain whole chunks out of the bar, so do them by all means but be tactical about it. The bar constantly charges up so you dont have to worry too much about it.
The way Capcom have dealt with letting the player handle attackers from both sides is pure class too! You can dodge anytime so while you are dealing biblical beatings on one brer who can handle the guy behind you by just tapping in the correct direction as prompted while continuing your attacks, you can fling SLOW and MACH in anytime (I always fling to SLOW the uppercut right down because it's pure GRIME!)
The demo goes on and you fight 2 sub bosses (both WICKED) and a helicopter boss) which involves dodging the blades and sending bullets and missiles back by knocking them off course in SLOW. It's so much fun! I almost didnt come in to work today cos I've been on it solid!
