    Horizontal shoot em ups..

Over the last 2/3 years there have been some pretty decent vertical shoot em ups released on home consoles, but as far as i know they are outweighing the horizontal shooters by some what, i'm hoping someone can correct me!

The only shoot em ups i can think that have been released on home consoles in the last few years are :-

    R-Type Final PS2
Choaniki PS2 (may have a slight spelling error, sorry)
    Border Down DC
    Gradius V

Have i missed any, as i like horizontal shoot em ups, but all the shoot em ups i seem to buy are vertical, not that there is anything wrong with that, i'm glad, like a lot of other that this genre still has life.

    Thank you for any input

I can't think of any other than the ones you mentioned. Vertical shooters have definitely dominated the scene over the past few years.

I remember back in the day that most shooters I played were Horizontal, but these days they are usually vertical.

I like both types- and this can be seen in my all time favourite shooter Axelay. I would love a similar game for a modern console!

Hori shmups are wicked to play on a widescreen telly.

Einhander is the best as far as PS1 is concerned in my opinion I love that game to bits.

One of the reasons i like hori shmups is because i have a widescreen, Gradius V looked absolutely stunning, especially with the colours they used, the blue, white, silver contrast, looked beautiful.

Any reason that vertical shooters seems to be more common than horizontal shooters?

Hi east, i hope someone might be able to shed some light on your question, just i'm currently playing mushi, i have raiden III pre-ordered, i just wouldn't mind a hori to go inbetween.

Oh, and yes, hand helds do count, just as already mentioned on this thread, hori shooters look so fine on a widescreen, but as well as that, a bit of hori action would be nice.

Border down on dc through rgb scart on widescreen looks delicious. Although i always find myself returning to the smaller crt monitor and vga signal for superior clarity

I'm guessing that it's still an area that arcades can do something different compared with the home market as not many of us have the luxury of nice Tate style monitors.

Eh? Why do shooters look any less stretched than any other 4:3 game played in 16:9? Stick to the ratio the game was designed for fellas, you'll lose definition.

Now, on a similar subject Tate 9:16 is closer to how most vert shmups should be set up in arcades than Tate 3:4. Anyone had the bottle to try it?

I get the impression that real hardcore shooter fans prefer vertical style, I think it has something to do with vertical allowing people to get ' in the zone ' easier than horizontal!
