    Ghosting, 360 & latest LCD's.

Now that we have the latest HD LCD's with their lack of chosting/motion blur, i hate to see that a lot of the 360's games are using a ghosting/motion blur effect to help with the frame rate (Atleast that's what they are saying). Finally we have ghosting/motion blur free LCD's then they actually add the effect to games. WTF?

I'm sorry but i hate this effect. It makes my eyes hurt and it feels like i constantly have to strain when looking at the screen. My eyes just can't keep up with the picture at times.

I've just taken the screen shot at the bottom from the latest HD Call of Duty 2 video. This effects makes the removale of ghositing on the latest LCD sets pretty ****ing pointless does'nt it? They are using the same effect in PGR3 and GoW.

I wanted my new LCD that i plan on getting and my 360 to be free from ghosting. Oh and it does'nt make it alright because the developers of the games have added this effect in. I think it's ridiculous tbh.

I've seen some people say that this effect looks "cool". Well it don't look cool for people who have been waiting for an LCD that's free from this "effect", does it?

isnt that screenshot from a point where you've just been blown up or shot or something? that looks a lot like brothers in arms simulated concussion type effects.

I think half the problem is that it's been taken from a video - it won't be nearly that bad when playing. (I hope!)

I agree though; what's the point in spending the cash on a blur-free LCD if they're just going to add it. What's the point in puting stupid amounts of trackside detail into Gotham 3 if they've got a motion blur going on? One of the devs themselves commented that you won't see it because:

      A) You'll be going so fast.
      B) The motion blur hides it.

I very much doubt they'd add anything that'll make the game look bad or worse than it usually would. Hold on and give it a try before you start attacking the developers.

          No!

When you get shot you get a very small blurring effect which does'nt bother me at all. However, every time you make a sharp turn or any other sharp movement you get bad ghosting.

Mate, watch the whole CoD2 video and you will see craploads of ghosting.

This has really pissd me off. It make the game look "soft" when you are moveing around in the heat of the battle. You know, if you put this game on the latest sets, and never told anyone about the developers adding this effect, people would go around saying that the new LCD's suffer from ghosting when displaying an HD signal.

As for PGR3, well, could you imagine if hey put ghosting/blurring in GT on the PS3?

              Hardley realistic is it?

All the developers seem to be giong crazy over this ghosting/blurring effect. So far it's in DoA4, PGR3, CoD2 & GoW and i've noticed it on RR6 (unless it was the panels natural bluring).

Don't they bloody realise that we don't want this damn effect because a lot of us want to buy the latest LCD's which are Ghosting/Blur free?

Also form what ive read the only reason they use this ghosting effect is to mask frame rate issues. Well should these latest consoles even have any frame rate issues?

So they've masked the frame rate issues in return for their new amazing "effect", which is basically nothing more than ghosting, great

I not using an LCD. The screen shot that i posted shows the new "effect" that all the developers seems to be going cray about. If you do have an LCD that does suffer from ghosting/motion blur then you can add the motion blur that comes form your panel to the motion blur the devlopers are adding to their games. In other words expect a lot of it. You've got the panels natural ghosting/blurring to deal with and the games.

Even with the latest ghosting/blur free sets we are still going to suffer form it because the developers have addd it to the dman game.

Spin your head around fast, is everything that you see sharp untill you stop moving? Nope.

My natural vision is not like what i can see in the CoD2 video. Its exaggerated in the video. The gosting effect makes my eyes ache. It's like the ghosting effect on some of the digtal TV channels with my CRT. Yes i have ghosting on my CRT, but it only happems with some of the channels. It makes me feel like i'm consanlty straining and focusing to watch the TV.

You can clearly see the effect on the CoD2 video when you are close to things.

If you look at a single frame of a movie you`ll notice that there is a certain amount of blur in it. I think it`s this effect that they are trying to emulate as it helps reduce the percieved jerkiness. I notice it a lot when I video stuff on a white sandy beach in bright sunlight, the footage has that horrible Baywatch jerky effect because the exposure time on each individual frame is so short(due to the high light levels)that there is virtually no bluring taking place.

It`s the reason that a 30fps film apears much smoother that a 30fps video game, I`m not sure if it`s needed at 60fps though.

won't that be from an interpolated video?

and if you don't know what I mean....

I mean that the game is running at 60FPS, buuuut the video has been encoded at 30FPs and has information from 2 frames merged into one, so the feel of the higher frame rate is still there.

Talk about jumping the gun Shin. Wait till the damn machine is out before you start criticising it for something you haven't yet seen for yourself.

Agreed, you need to calm down with the ranting. Do you know better than the respective graphics programmers and artists about what makes a good looking game?

i agree with shin. most of the graphical fads i dont mind (filtered textures, then lens flare, then bump mapping, then cel shading, then normal mapping, then HDR) but anything which degrades the image is a no go in my books, i never enable 'bloom' effects in games and i sure as hell hope i can disable all this blur rubbish. Dead or Alive is only using it for the replays which will probably be a pretty good use for it, but games which put it in the gameplay in order to mask the low frame rate should be chucked straight into the bargin bins.

the whole point of the next gen experiance is every game will be in high-def. so why on earth would they then go and blur the detail out of it? and just imagine how bad games with bluring enabled will look on a bog standard TV which has 'blur as standard' resolution.

Thankfully the consumer always gets the last say, if i dont like a game i wont buy it.
