    PSP Titles @ 333mhz

I've been booting UMD's recently using fastloader v0.7 to switch the bus speed to 333mhz.

The difference it has made to the 2 titles which I found annoying is incredible - namely WipeoutPure & Colin Mcrae.

Colin is great but the framerate fluctuations I found highly irritating - Wipeout less so but the problem was still there. Upping the CPU to 333 has completely eliminated these problems - and I mean Colin & Wipeout now run smooth as silk. The difference is incredible.

It's made me wonder if some dev's haven't been aiming at 333 and either scaling back slightly or just leaving it in the knowledge/hope that Sony will unlock it relatively soon.

Either way, of you're still on V1.5 and fancy playing these games as I reckon they were intended (or at least MUCH better than they currently play) then I suggest you give it a try !

Sony still consider battery life more important than CPU speed im afraid.

They need to be unlocking 333mhz for Winning Eleven 9 UE cause' the slow-down is chronic at times.

Do you think they'll actually unlock it in a firmware change, allowing old games to use 333mhz as with Fastloader?

I reckon it'll only be used in future releases, with no backwards compatibility - Sony are annoying numpties for that kind of thing.

No I definately reckon it'll be a firmware thing. I reckon GT will be the game to unlock it they ain't getting that running sweet without doing so.

Claw - I honestly haven't found that it drains the battery that badly. I don't imagine it uses more battery than running the light at full brightness (if I can I always have the light off !)

          Bleeders - I don't have WE9 but I've read elsewhere that 333 eliminates the slowdown !

Why not let the user decide.

The thing has options to configure practically everything else. All they needed to do was put a slider in the system config menu for performance vs battery usage.

There's no need to be running at full whack for games like Kollon for example.

I'm quite impressed that the games are actually stable at 333Mhz CPU, you'd think some timing or scheduling would be messed up somewhere along the line seeing as they'd been developed for the fixed PSP system.

With you there Wush - hence my suspiscion it was aimed at 333mhz then just dropped back at the detriment of the framerate !

And that's why I think it'll be a full scale clock increase at some point in the future - the sily smoothness of wipeout pure & mcrae at 333 practically makes them different games.

I find it fascinating that it's taken a hack due to due homebrew to make people aware of how much better and also reliable 333 mode is. Initailly It was mentioned that your PSP may be unstable and of course there's also the battery life to consider but I'd much rather play a game without slowdown and have a hours less battery.

Surely it's just a matter of time before Sony enables 333 as standard. I can't help but feel that we've all been guinea pigs at Sonys expense.

It's nothing to do with the firmware, it's dictated by the developer. Any developer can create a game that runs at 333mhz, but it will probably be rejected by Sony as it won't adhere to their power consumption guidelines.

You will probably find that the two games you mentioned, which although are running smoother, are actually running too fast as they're not developed to scale with the increased CPU speed.

Evidently then it's dictated by Sony not the developer

Don't care if they're running too fast - they're running the way I think most people would like them to run - the way I imagine they were intended. I suggest people try it if they haven't then come back and post impressions - couple of laps of either game and I promise you'll never go back !

I can't understand why the option to use 333 isn't already in the firmware, surely it's up to the user to evaluate whether they want performance or battery life?

For that reason I'm just a bit worried that it will be a per-game only option.

Well no. A developer can work at 333mhz if they want and it could pass the power consumption tests as there's a lot of other factors involved (disk access being the main one).

Aye my mate has just confirmed that the clock in Wipeout Pure is gubbed when running at 333 (he's a TT junkie)

So is he just getting different times, or has he actually used a stopwatch to compare game time to real time?
