    PSP screen latency

    Hello all,

I got my new PSP few days ago, I'm very happy and impressed with it, I've grabed Ridge Racer with it, excelent game.

But I'm here to talk about the screen, my PSP model has a lot of latency, when light colors are displayed it's relativly good, but when it comes with black/blue/red colors, it makes big trails :

    exemples :
-Ridge Racers : All the cars and their lights make trails, persisting a lot.

    -Doom (shareware) :
    here I've uploaded a video (1,45mo) :

So could you tell me if it's the same on your unit, if you got the same problem.

I've heard PSP got 4 type of screen : Toshiba, Samsung, Sharp and Daewoo (best to worst), is anybody aware of this ?

I have 10 days to replace my unit or get me pay back (my store have a waranty of satisfaction), so I'm wondering if I take it back and try to purchase a Ceramic White, which could be better...

Hm, that does look like it could be your screen, Im pretty sure Doom doesnt have that feature ingame. It doesnt look delberate, but I dont know if your screens dodgy or weather its a feature of all the PSP TFT's.

Also all this different TFT lark is rubbush, only sharp make the screens for PSP. No one else. . . .

You cant really judge the screen on a doom or any emulated game etc as you dont know how well its supposed to run. It could just be weird coding or whatever. Buttt, RR is very much like that, I thought at first it was the screen but playing otehr games that are fast like Wipeout Pure and Burnout Legends, theres little or no blur compared to the RR one.

The response time ain`t to great on the psp`s i`m afraid which Is is causing the trailing of colours and find it especially bad when It comes to blacks. There`s quite abit of trailing in most of the games I`ve played on the psp except for wipeout which goes for quite a muted colour palette, so it doesn`t suffer as bad. There`s quite a few people in denial on this issue I`ve found over the months but Is worse with some games than others. Prime examples that show up this screen I found are ridge racers, mecury and lumines when shifting from left to right fast.

That's pretty bad, certainly the latency isn't that noticable on my machine. Better to judge it from a commercial game though.

Well it seems to me that the latency is that bad (I didn't know that was the word for it - it was just ghosting to me). Thing is, as you have pointed out, it is far worse for blacks and reds and where there is high contrast. It also is worse on games that run at 60fps rather than 30fps.

Many commercial games don't suffer from it as bad - this is not down to the screen, it is down to the developers putting effort into avoiding high contrasts and blacks. One of the devs of Pure mentioned this when I was discussing it over at wipeoutzone.

So it becomes very noticable in homebrew, like Doom unfortunately, where the efforts are to keep it accurate, not adapt it for the PSP screen.

Tank you all for your answers
I ve noticed something : on homebrew games (mostly emulation of old hardware), there is less latency when I activate VSynch.
(tested on Viewpoint, you can't miss it with this game)

As far as I see all the replys, everyone seems to get an high latency, perhaps some people just don't notice it.

For the Doom video, it's the worst exemple I found, just to figure what is happening, all my other games look realy better, and some games with light colors don't show any trail.

Well, I'll keep this PSP and enjoy it a maximum (I'm not used to be really enthousiast with hardware, but this machine makes me realy happy, the last one I loved so much was Dreamcast).

Yeah, this is why I consider the DS' screens to be better. Sure, they're not as bright, but they have a much better response time.

The white PSP I just got is exactly the same as my Japanese launch machine was in this regard - it hasn't changed. (the white PSPs are built much better in almost every other way though, compared to my launch machines, and some Euro PSPs)

A picture I took of it last night when showing it to a friend:

This was shot at 1/200, so all the blur is the PSP, not the camera.

on a side note: Ridge Racers has lots of blur / trailing / latency programmed into the game it self. To give it a sensation of speed, sadly this blur is enhanced by the high response time of the sharp screen. Sharp is not know for their low reponse time screens

its awful when encoding your own videos to memory stick, blacks mainly. Only thing i have found tho is this problem isnt apparent in the UMD movies (well it is, just no where near as bad ) but home converted video's are terrible, its not down to the bitrate or conversion as played back on the pc they are fine.

Yup, bad blurring on dark colours is horrendous on encoded movies. Somewhat hilariously I encoded and watched Dark City on my PSP the other day. The clue was in the title I guess. I should've worried when it came out of the codec about a third of the size of any other movie I've ever encoded (not a lot to compress really, 90% of the screen is black 100% of the time...) By crimmeny, it wasn't a pleasant sight to behold.

Ghost in the Shell fared a lot better though.

The secret. Only watch movies with a lot of daytime scenes, or anime. Or anime movies set in the daytime, with gigantic demon cocks *

                            * gigantic demon cocks optional

I encoded a few episodes of Spaced and they were terrible. Its made far worse as its shot on a camera which is quite shakey and the PSP cant handle all the movement.

I really thought I'd make use of watching films on the go and when I'm on call at work but the screens so bad I just cant be bothered. I'd rather have paid a little more and had a decent screen. Its odd how much is made of dead pixels which I have two of and dont bother me at all, but the poor latency is hardly mentioned but is far worse.
