    "One never knows"

    Q. Finally TVG ran an April Fools gag this year about SEGA?s supposed re-entry to the hardware market in the West. Do you ever think that the company will ever return to the hardware fold or was the Dreamcast really the end of the line?

    A. One never knows...

Pointless news! Of course Sega would love to go back into Hardware if it was financially viable and a likely success. So therefore "One Never Knows...."

That and the fact it's speculation from a website that probably only knows as much as we do. We may as well post our own opinions as news.

It'd be interesting for Sega to get back into the console game... but if you were to ask me if they could spend that money more wisely, than I would say yes.

The development of new fresh content, along with sequels to high profile dead series/games such as Shenmue, Jet Set Radio, Panzer Dragoon, NiGHTS, Rez etc. would go down a treat. If Sega honestly had to doom themselves, I'd prefer it if they spent money on the development of unique and exciting software than a probable failed re-entry into the hardware market to do Sammy's bidding.

this old chestnut, in my opinion the sega of old died with the dreamcast. Dreamcast did deserve much more than what it was given, but found itself dead in the water thanks to a combination of sega's own poor marketing and the arrogance of the general gaming public. Nobody would love sega to return to the hardware market more than me but that is never going to happen they are cattering for the casual gamer now and have found profit in doing so theres no way they will take the risk. It could have been so different, i remember before sammy brought sega all the rumours of microsoft buying sega, if that had happened sega would have had the financial security to take risks and continue with the quality output that had become familar on the DC, xbox would have become an unofficial sega console of sorts. But unfortunately that never happened microsoft paid stupid money for RARE when they could have had sega for half the price, the rest is history.

              It's an interview not speculation.

It's obvious that all Sega have been doing these last few years are releasing games which gurantee them a certain level of profit. There profit margins have doubled in the last year and Sega are once again one of the biggest companies in Japan (financially).

Lets not forget that the merger with Sammy has now given Sega them the resources to release some truly awesome games on Next Gen without the worry of financial constraint.

I belive Next Gen will be Sega's time...

With the top link broken when the thread was originally posted, it sounded as though it was website speculation. To be honest, I doubt Sega Europe are going to be the ones to break news of Sega re-entering the hardware market. It seems like a stock answer in leaving the door open, in the same way Suzuki says the main series of Shenmue isn't dead. The only arm of Sega that will have any indication as to whether they re-enter or not will be Sega Japan/Sammy.

when reading the interview, it's clear that the guy just wants to hype all operations of Sega, from arcade to next gen games, and also possible (unlikely) future hardware platform. Can't blame him though, it's his job.
